Hey everyone! I've been lurking here for a while and finally finished a 5-part short-form horror series (each part ~45 seconds) that I'm planning to post on YouTube Shorts and TikTok. I'm a beginner, so I'd love some honest feedback on the editing style, pacing, and overall concept. The series follows a person waking up in a room that slowly changes each part – subtle differences, like a door appearing, or the clock ticking backwards. I used a mix of stock footage and practical shots with my phone (Samsung S23 Ultra) and edited in DaVinci Resolve 19.

I'm also struggling with thumbnail design – for Shorts, I know the thumbnail isn't as crucial, but I want to create a compelling cover frame for the series playlist. So far I've just used a dark, grainy frame with the title 'The Room' in a creepy font, but it feels too generic. Any tips on making it stand out without looking clickbaity? That's far more intriguing than a generic font. Also, check your color grading – the S23 footage can look a bit flat, so push the contrast and add a teal-orange grade in Resolve's Color page. For the series, I'd recommend creating a consistent LUT for all parts to maintain visual cohesion. You can make one in the Color tab using the 'Create LUT from Grade' option. As for thumbnails, since Shorts don't always show them, focus on the first 2 seconds of your video – make that the 'thumbnail' by using a freeze frame or a jump cut that creates a hook. I agree with vibecore72 – text on thumbnails often kills the mystery. But for a series playlist, you might want a consistent visual motif across all 5 covers. Maybe use the same room but with a different anomaly in each (door, clock, shadow, etc.) – that way they look cohesive and tell a story. Also, for Shorts, remember that the 'cover' is chosen from a frame in the video, so you can't upload a custom thumbnail unless you use the 'Select thumbnail' option after posting – but you can always edit the frame in Resolve and export it as a still. Thanks everyone, this is all super helpful! I took your advice and re-edited the first part with the audio drone and glitch transitions – it feels way creepier now.
