Hey everyone! I’ve been working on a nature documentary reel for months, and I finally finished a 4K cut. The goal is to showcase my skills in cinematography, color grading, and sound design to attract potential clients or collaborators. I’ve put together a 2-minute highlight reel featuring slow-motion shots of birds, macro footage of insects, and sweeping drone shots of forests and rivers.

I’m using a Sony FX3 with a 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II lens, and I graded everything in DaVinci Resolve using the DaVinci Wide Gamut color space. I’m particularly proud of the color contrast between the warm sunrise scenes and the cooler forest shots. However, I’m not entirely sure if the pacing is right, and I’d love feedback on the overall flow and whether the sound design feels immersive.

Hey directorexpert95, nice work on the reel! I watched it twice, and here are my thoughts. The color grading is solid—the warm/cool contrast is visually striking, especially in the sunrise shots. However, I felt the pacing was a bit rushed in the first 30 seconds. You have several very short cuts (2-3 seconds each) that don't let the viewer breathe. For a nature documentary, longer takes often work better to immerse the audience. Try extending some of your favorite shots to 5-6 seconds, especially the drone shots. Also, the sound design is good, but I'd suggest adding more ambient layers—like subtle wind or bird calls—under the music to make it feel more organic. You can do this in Resolve's Fairlight by adding a few ambient tracks and automating the volume. Keep it up!

Totally agree with actions on the pacing. I’d also suggest reviewing your shot selection—some of the macro shots are incredibly detailed but they’re cut too quickly. For a reel, you want to show your best work, but also give each shot enough time to be appreciated. I’d recommend using the 'J-cuts' technique in your edit: let the audio from the next scene start a few frames before the video cut. That smooths the transition and makes the reel feel more professional. Also, consider exporting your reel in H.265 with a bitrate of 50 Mbps for YouTube—it’ll preserve the 4K detail better than H.264 at the same bitrate. Your color management is on point, but make sure you're monitoring on a calibrated display to avoid surprises on other screens.

Great job overall! I’m a big fan of the wildlife footage—what drone are you using? The forest shots have a lovely depth. One thing I noticed is that the audio levels are a bit inconsistent: some scenes have loud music while others are quieter. In Fairlight, you can use the 'Normalize' feature on each clip to bring them to a consistent -14 LUFS, which is the standard for streaming. Also, for the slow-motion shots, I’d recommend using optical flow in Resolve if you shot at 60fps and are conforming to 24fps—it gives smoother motion. And don’t forget to add a subtle vignette to draw the eye to the center of the frame; that can make the cinematic feel pop even more.

Thanks everyone for the fantastic feedback! I’ve made some changes based on your suggestions: I extended the drone shots, added J-cuts, and normalized the audio to -14 LUFS. The reel feels much more immersive now. I also tweaked the color grade slightly to enhance the contrast without being too heavy.
