Sony A7S III vs. FX3 for Run-and-Gun Documentary Work – Which Is the Better Buy in 2026?
Hey everyone, I'm a solo documentary filmmaker and I'm finally ready to upgrade from my trusty Panasonic GH5. I've narrowed it down to the Sony A7S III and the FX3, but I'm stuck on which one makes more sense for my style. I shoot a lot of run-and-gun interviews, handheld B-roll, and low-light situations (think night markets and dimly lit interiors). I also do some vlogging-style talking-head shots where I'm holding the camera at arm's length. I know they share the same sensor and basically the same image quality, but the ergonomics and features are different. The A7S III has the tilting screen and EVF, which seems great for vlogging and outdoor shooting. The FX3 has the cooling fan and the top handle with XLR inputs, which is tempting for audio. But I'm worried about the lack of a viewfinder on the FX3 for bright daylight and the extra cost of buying the XLR handle separately.
