Hello from a long-time lurker – finally introducing myself and my gear setup
Hey everyone! I've been a silent member of ShortVi for about a year now, soaking up all the amazing advice from this community. I finally decided to introduce myself because I'm at a turning point in my content creation journey and I'd love to get some feedback from you all. I'm a 34-year-old filmmaker from Portland, Oregon, and I've been making videos for local businesses and events for about 8 years. I recently decided to pivot into creating my own educational content about filmmaking and video editing, specifically for beginners who want to learn on a budget. I've already shot a few test videos using my current setup: a Sony A7III with a 24-70mm f/2.8 GM lens, a Rode VideoMic Pro+ on a boom, and a cheap LED panel from Amazon. For editing, I use DaVinci Resolve 18.6 on a PC with an RTX 3070 and 32GB of RAM. My main question is: should I invest in a proper teleprompter for my talking-head videos, or is it better to memorize my scripts and look at the lens? I've seen mixed opinions online, and I want to make sure my content feels natural and engaging. Also, any advice on lighting for a small home office would be super helpful – I'm currently working with just one softbox and a window. Thanks for having me, and I'm excited to finally be part of the conversation!
Dialogue Audio Too Harsh in Interviews – EQ or New Mic?
Hey everyone, I’ve been shooting interviews for a local documentary series using a Rode NTG3 shotgun mic on a boom pole, feeding into a Zoom F6 recorder. The audio sounds clean, but the dialogue is coming out really harsh and sibilant – especially on 'S' and 'T' sounds. I’ve tried a few things like adding a de-esser in post (using the default preset in Adobe Audition) and cutting around 5 kHz, but it still feels brittle and fatiguing to listen to. I’m shooting in a small office with lots of glass and hard surfaces, so I know reflections are an issue, but I’ve got the mic close (about 12 inches) and I’m using a Rycote blimp. Could this be a mic voicing issue, or is my approach to EQ wrong? Should I consider a different mic like a dynamic or a large-diaphragm condenser, or is there a better way to treat the room? I’d love to hear how others handle this in similar setups.
Best Mobile Editing App for Vertical Shorts in 2026?
Hey everyone! I'm a new creator trying to get into the YouTube Shorts and TikTok game, and I'm currently editing everything on my phone. I've been using CapCut for a while, but I keep seeing people talk about other apps like InShot, VN, and even DaVinci Resolve for iPad. My main focus is vertical video, quick cuts, captions, and maybe some light color grading. I'm also curious about which apps handle 4K 60fps footage from my iPhone 15 Pro without overheating or losing quality. What are you all using for mobile editing in 2026? I'm looking for something that's reliable, has a decent free tier (or is worth paying for), and doesn't have a huge learning curve. I'm open to both iOS and Android suggestions since I sometimes use my Samsung tablet as well. Also, if anyone has tips on exporting settings for Shorts (like bitrate or resolution) that would be awesome. Thanks in advance!
Dealing with false copyright claims on YouTube – what's the best strategy?
Hey everyone, I've been running a small channel for about two years now, mostly doing tutorial videos with screen recordings and some background music from the YouTube Audio Library. A few days ago, I got a copyright claim on one of my most popular videos, and I'm pretty sure it's false. The claimant is a random 'music publisher' that doesn't even have the track I used – I double-checked the song in my video, and it's definitely the one from the Audio Library, which is free to use. The claim is blocking monetization, and I'm losing revenue. I've already filed a dispute through YouTube Studio, but I'm nervous about the next steps. I've heard horror stories about counter-notifications and legal threats. Should I wait it out, or should I escalate to a counter-notification? Also, what's the best way to protect my channel from these kinds of claims in the future? Any advice from people who've dealt with this would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!
How to Optimize RTMP Settings for Low-Latency Live Streaming on YouTube?
I've been live streaming gaming content on YouTube for a few months now, but I'm struggling with latency. My viewers often complain that my stream is 15-20 seconds behind my actions, which makes chat interactions feel awkward. I'm using OBS Studio with the default RTMP settings, and I've tried lowering my bitrate, but that just makes the quality worse. I'm on a 100 Mbps fiber connection, so bandwidth isn't an issue. My PC is solid (Ryzen 7 5800X, RTX 3070, 32GB RAM). I want to get latency down to around 5 seconds or less without sacrificing too much quality. What specific settings should I change in OBS and in YouTube Studio to achieve this? Also, are there any advanced RTMP tweaks or alternative protocols I should consider?
OBS Stutter with Dual PC Setup – Is My Capture Card or Encoding Settings the Problem?
Hey everyone, I recently upgraded to a dual PC streaming setup to take the load off my gaming rig. I’m using an Elgato HD60 S+ as my capture card, and my streaming PC is a dedicated build with an Intel i7-12700K, 32GB RAM, and an RTX 3070. I’m running OBS Studio 30.2.3 on the stream PC, capturing the gaming PC at 1080p60 via the HD60 S+ (which should support that, right?). The problem: my stream has intermittent stutters and dropped frames, even though my upload speed is solid (50 Mbps) and I’m using a wired connection. The stutter happens every 10-20 seconds, and it’s not a network issue – the OBS stats show only about 0.5% dropped frames due to network, but the render and encoding frames are dropping more. I’ve tried switching the encoder from x264 to NVENC (using the RTX 3070), but it still stutters. I’m also using the Elgato’s 4K Capture Utility for firmware updates, but I don’t have that open while streaming. Could it be my OBS settings? I’m using a 1920x1080 base canvas, output scaled to 1280x720 at 60fps, with a bitrate of 4500 Kbps. What am I missing? Any advice would be super appreciated!
Best royalty-free music libraries for faceless YouTube channels in 2026?
<img src="/uploads/video-editing-audio-waveform-workspace-1785677421.jpg" alt="Video editor's desk with audio waveform on screen, studio monitors, and keyboard, representing royalty-free music selection for YouTube" class="thread-seo-image" style="width:100%; max-height:450px; object-fit:cover; border-radius:var(--radius-md); margin-bottom:20px;"> Hey everyone! I'm starting a faceless documentary-style channel and I'm drowning in the sheer number of royalty-free music libraries out there. I've tried YouTube's Audio Library but the tracks feel repetitive and cheap. I need something that gives my videos that cinematic, high-production feel without breaking the bank. What are the go-to libraries in 2026 that offer high-quality, unique tracks with clear licensing for monetization? I'm open to both free and paid options, but I want to avoid any copyright claim headaches down the line. Also, how do you guys handle SFX? I find that good sound effects really elevate the editing, but most bundles are either too generic or too expensive. Any recommendations for SFX packs that are worth the money, or maybe some hidden gems that are free? I'm on a budget but willing to invest if it's a game-changer. Thanks in advance for your insights!
Best OBS settings for a 1080p60 gaming stream with a single PC?
<img src="/uploads/single-pc-obs-streaming-settings-1785676038.jpg" alt="Single PC streaming setup with OBS Studio settings overlay" class="thread-seo-image" style="width:100%; max-height:450px; object-fit:cover; border-radius:var(--radius-md); margin-bottom:20px;"> Hey everyone! I've been streaming for about six months now, mostly indie games and some FPS titles. I'm running a single PC setup with an RTX 3070 and an i7-10700K, and I'm trying to get the best possible quality at 1080p60 without breaking the bank on bitrate. My upload speed is 20 Mbps, so I know I have some headroom, but I'm not sure if I should use NVENC or x264, and what the ideal bitrate and encoder settings are for a smooth, high-quality stream. I've seen conflicting advice about using CBR vs. capped VBR, and whether to enable look-ahead or psycho-visual tuning. Also, I'm curious about the new AV1 codec – is it worth upgrading my GPU for that, or is NVENC still the way to go? Any help would be awesome!
How to structure a brand deal proposal when you have under 10k subs?
<img src="/uploads/brand-deal-proposal-media-kit-1785648437.jpg" alt="Creator preparing a brand deal proposal with media kit and rate card on laptop in a bright studio" class="thread-seo-image" style="width:100%; max-height:450px; object-fit:cover; border-radius:var(--radius-md); margin-bottom:20px;"> Hey everyone! I've been creating content for about a year now and I'm at 8.2k subs. I've started getting a few emails from smaller brands asking about sponsored content, but I have no idea how to structure a proper proposal. I don't want to undersell myself, but I also don't want to scare them off with crazy numbers. What should I include in my media kit or rate card? How do I negotiate when they ask for my 'rates'? Any advice would be super helpful!
How do you all manage the mental burnout of constant content creation?
Hey everyone, I've been running my channel for about three years now, and lately I've been feeling completely drained. I used to love editing and planning new videos, but now it feels like a chore. I'm constantly chasing deadlines, trying to keep up with algorithm changes, and comparing myself to other creators. It's starting to affect my personal life and my passion for filmmaking. I know this is kind of off-topic from the usual gear and editing questions, but I figured this community would understand. How do you all handle the pressure? Do you take breaks, change your workflow, or just power through? I'd love to hear any strategies that have worked for you to keep the creative spark alive without burning out completely.
How to price your first freelance video editing jobs without underselling yourself?
Hey everyone, I've been editing videos for about two years now, mostly for my own YouTube channel and some friends' projects. Recently, I decided to start freelancing on platforms like Upwork and Fiverr to turn this into a real income stream. The problem is, I have no idea how to price my work. I see editors charging anywhere from $20 to $100+ per video, and I'm worried that if I charge too much, I'll scare off clients, but if I charge too little, I'll be stuck in a race to the bottom. I mainly do YouTube-style edits: talking head videos with b-roll, captions, basic motion graphics, and color correction. I'm efficient in Premiere Pro and After Effects, and I can turn around a 10-minute video in about 6-8 hours of focused work. I want to position myself as a mid-tier editor, but I don't want to undersell myself or overpromise. What's a fair starting rate for someone with my skill level? And how do I communicate that pricing to clients without sounding greedy?
Best budget-friendly lighting setup for talking head videos with a shallow depth of field?
<img src="/uploads/budget-three-point-lighting-talking-head-sony-a6400-1785158599.jpg" alt="Budget three-point lighting setup for talking head videos with Sony A6400 and Sigma 30mm lens in home office" class="thread-seo-image" style="width:100%; max-height:450px; object-fit:cover; border-radius:var(--radius-md); margin-bottom:20px;"> Hey everyone, I'm trying to level up my talking head videos for YouTube, but I'm on a tight budget (around $300 total for lighting). I'm using a Sony A6400 with a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens, and I love the look of a shallow depth of field—like that soft background blur. The problem is, when I shoot at f/1.4 or f/2, my face often ends up slightly out of focus or the exposure is too dark, and I can't get a clean key light without harsh shadows. I've been using a single Neewer 660 LED panel with a softbox, but it's not enough to get proper exposure at ISO 100-200, and the color temperature feels off (greenish tint). I'm considering adding a second light for fill and maybe a hair light. What specific lights, modifiers, and placement would you recommend for a three-point lighting setup under $300? Also, any tips for avoiding focus breathing or ensuring sharp focus at wide apertures? I'm shooting in a small home office with white walls.
How to Turn a Simple B-Roll Compilation into a Cinematic Short Film?
<img src="/uploads/davinci-resolve-broll-city-cinematic-editing-timeline-1784552781.jpg" alt="DaVinci Resolve editing timeline with cinematic B-roll city clips and color grading" class="thread-seo-image" style="width:100%; max-height:450px; object-fit:cover; border-radius:var(--radius-md); margin-bottom:20px;"> Hey everyone! I've been shooting a lot of B-roll around my city – street scenes, coffee shops, reflections, and some nature shots. I've got about 30 clips totaling maybe 2 minutes of raw footage. The problem is, they feel disconnected and random when I string them together. I want to create a cohesive, atmospheric short film (under 60 seconds) that tells a story without dialogue, maybe about urban solitude or the rhythm of the city. I'm editing in DaVinci Resolve 18.6 on a decent PC. I've tried adding a simple LUT and some slow-motion, but it still feels like a slideshow with transitions. What are some pro techniques to weave these clips into a narrative? Should I use a specific sound design approach, color grading strategy, or pacing trick? Any advice on shot order or using in-camera effects like whip pans to connect scenes? I'd love to see examples or hear workflows from others who've done this successfully.
Monetization confusion: AdSense vs. Creator Fund – which is actually better for short-form creators in 2026?
<img src="/uploads/adsense-vs-creator-fund-workspace-2026-1784473279.jpg" alt="Creator workspace with dual monitors displaying YouTube AdSense and TikTok Creator Fund analytics for short-form video monetization comparison" class="thread-seo-image" style="width:100%; max-height:450px; object-fit:cover; border-radius:var(--radius-md); margin-bottom:20px;"> Hey everyone, I’ve been making vertical videos for about a year now and I’m finally hitting the eligibility thresholds on both YouTube and TikTok. I’m trying to decide where to focus my energy for actual revenue. On YouTube, the Shorts revenue share through AdSense is now paying out based on ad impressions in the Shorts Feed, but I’ve heard the RPM is still pretty low compared to long-form. On TikTok, the Creator Fund has been revamped into the “Creator Rewards Program” with higher payouts for longer videos and higher engagement, but the requirements seem stricter. I’m currently doing 60-second tutorials and 30-second skits. Which platform should I prioritize for monetization in 2026? What are the real numbers you’re seeing per 1,000 views? Any hidden pitfalls I should watch out for?
Best way to handle noise reduction in Premiere Pro without losing quality?
<img src="/uploads/premiere-pro-audition-noise-reduction-workflow-1784276226.jpg" alt="Video editor's workspace with Premiere Pro and Adobe Audition spectral frequency display for noise reduction" class="thread-seo-image" style="width:100%; max-height:450px; object-fit:cover; border-radius:var(--radius-md); margin-bottom:20px;"> I'm working on a documentary-style interview shot in a moderately noisy environment (AC hum and some traffic noise). I've tried the built-in DeNoise effect in Premiere Pro, but it seems to introduce artifacts and make the audio sound a bit muffled. I'm editing in Premiere Pro 2024 and have access to Adobe Audition via Dynamic Link. What's the most effective workflow for noise reduction that preserves voice clarity? Should I use Audition's Adaptive Noise Reduction or is there a better plugin? I'm willing to invest in a third-party solution if necessary.
