Best Budget-Friendly Softbox Setup for Interview Videos?
Hey everyone! I'm a solo creator focusing on interview-style videos for my YouTube channel. I've been using a single cheap LED panel, but the lighting looks flat and harsh, especially when I film guests. I'm looking to upgrade to a softbox setup but I'm on a tight budget (around $200-300 total). I've seen a lot of options like the Godox SL series and Neewer softboxes, but I'm confused about which ones are actually worth it for interviews with two people sitting side by side. I need something that is easy to set up and break down, since I film in a small home office. Also, I'm using a shotgun mic on a boom, so I want to avoid any flicker or hum from the lights. Any recommendations on specific models, sizes, and placement? Also, should I get continuous lights or can I use strobes? I'm not doing any motion-freeze stuff, just talking heads. Thanks in advance!
Anyone else here secretly a synthwave producer? Share your setup!
Okay, I know this is off-topic, but I've been a video editor for 10 years and I've recently fallen down a rabbit hole of making synthwave/retrowave music for fun. I'm not a musician by any means, but I've been using Ableton Live 11 Lite (came with my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2) and I'm obsessed with that nostalgic, 80s sound. I've got a Roland JX-08 and a Korg Volca Keys, and I'm just messing around with arpeggios and chorus effects. I'm curious if any other creators here have a hidden passion for music production, especially synthwave. What's your setup? Any tips for getting that authentic 80s drum sound (I'm currently using the LinnDrum samples in Ableton's Drum Rack)? And how do you balance music production with your video work? I'd love to hear your stories and maybe some gear recommendations under $500.
Showcasing Your Work: How Do You Structure a Portfolio That Actually Lands Clients?
Hey everyone, I've been editing for about five years now, mostly doing freelance work for local businesses and YouTubers. I've got a solid collection of projects, but my portfolio feels like a random dump of videos with no clear narrative. I want to start pitching to bigger brands and agencies, and I know my portfolio needs to be more strategic. How do you all structure your portfolios to actually impress clients and get them to reach out? Do you focus on a specific niche, or show a range of skills? Also, what's the ideal length for a reel or portfolio video? I'd love to hear what's worked for you. I've been thinking about creating a dedicated portfolio website, but I'm not sure if that's overkill or if a well-curated Vimeo or YouTube channel is enough. I also struggle with how to present case studies—should I include breakdowns of the creative process, or just show the final product? Any advice on how to make my work stand out in a sea of other editors would be massively appreciated!
Why Does My 4K Footage Look Soft in DaVinci Resolve? (Sony A7S III)
Hey everyone! I've been shooting on a Sony A7S III in 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 (XAVC S-I) and editing in DaVinci Resolve Studio 18.6. My footage looks tack sharp when I preview it in the camera's LCD, but after importing into Resolve, it looks noticeably softer, almost like there's a slight blur or lack of detail. I'm not applying any sharpening or blur effects, and my timeline resolution is set to 4K UHD (3840x2160). I've checked my clip attributes and they match the source. I'm rendering out to H.265 for YouTube, but the softness is already visible in the edit timeline before any export. I've tried different settings like disabling the 'Use optimized media if available' and setting the timeline to 'Full Res', but it still looks soft. Could this be a color management issue? I'm using DaVinci YRGB Color Managed with the Sony S-Log3/S-Gamut3.Cine input color space and Rec.709 Gamma 2.4 output. I've also noticed that when I zoom into 100% in the viewer, it's not as crisp as I'd expect. Is there something I'm missing with the RAW vs. compressed settings, or is there a known issue with A7S III footage in Resolve? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
YouTube Shorts views dropped after hitting 10k subs – algorithm change or my content?
Hey everyone, I run a small tech review channel and I’ve been focusing heavily on Shorts for the past 6 months. I hit 10k subscribers last week, which felt amazing, but almost instantly my Shorts views dropped from an average of 5k-15k to under 500. The content style, hashtags, and posting schedule haven’t changed. I’m using the same hook structure (first 2 seconds showing the product), same 15-20 second length, and same tags like #tech #review #shorts. I’ve checked YouTube Studio – the swipe away rate is still around 30%, and the average view duration is 80-90%. Has anyone else experienced a sudden drop after a milestone? Is this a known algorithm shift for channels crossing 10k, or could my content be getting flagged as repetitive? I’m starting to think maybe I need to pivot to longer form, but I really enjoyed the Shorts growth. Any insights would be hugely appreciated.
YouTube Shorts views plummeted after 3 months of steady growth – algorithm shadow ban or content fatigue?
Hey everyone, I run a faceless Shorts channel in the 'oddly satisfying' niche (soap cutting, kinetic sand, etc.). For the first 3 months, I was getting 10k-50k views per Short consistently, with a few hitting 200k+. My average CTR was around 25% and retention hovered at 70-80%. Suddenly, about 2 weeks ago, my views dropped to under 500 per Short. Upload frequency, hashtags, thumbnail style, and music selection are all identical. I haven't received any community guideline strikes. Has anyone else experienced this sudden plateau? Is it possible the algorithm is 'testing' my content against a new audience pool? Or could it be that my niche is just oversaturated now? I'm considering switching to longer-form content, but I'd love to hear if anyone has recovered from a similar slump without changing niches.
