Hey everyone! I run a small cooking channel (shortsflow53) and have been posting daily Reels for about 3 months. Everything was going great – my first 2 months averaged 50k-200k views per reel, with a few hitting 1M+. But for the past 3 weeks, my views have dropped to 2k-5k max. I haven't changed my content style, posting time, or hashtag strategy. I'm using a Sony ZV-1, editing in Premiere Pro (vertical 1080x1920, 30fps), and adding trending audio from the Reels library. I've checked my account status – no violations, no strikes. Is this a shadowban? Or is the algorithm just testing me? I'm really discouraged and considering quitting. Any advice would be super appreciated!
Reels reach tanked after 3 weeks – algorithm shadowban or just bad luck?

Hey! First off, don't quit – this is super common and it's likely not a shadowban (Instagram doesn't have a 'shadowban' for normal accounts; they just reduce distribution). The algorithm is constantly testing new content against your audience's behavior. The drop could be due to a few things:
1. **Trending audio fatigue**: Even if the audio is trending, if your niche (cooking) doesn't align with the current trend's audience, the algorithm may push it to the wrong people, hurting your completion rate. Try using original audio or niche-specific sounds (like ASMR cooking sounds) for a week to see if that helps.
2. **Posting frequency**: Daily posting can sometimes cause fatigue if your content isn't varied enough. Try posting 4-5 times a week and focus on quality over quantity. Also, check your retention graph in Reels insights – if you see a steep drop in the first 2 seconds, that's your hook. Experiment with a stronger hook (e.g., start with the final dish, then rewind).
3. **Hashtag strategy**: Your hashtags might be too broad or repetitive. Use a mix of 3-5 niche hashtags (like #quickrecipes, #cookingreels) and 2-3 broad ones (#reels, #food). Avoid banned or spammy hashtags – even if they're not banned, they can trigger spam filters.
Also, check if your account is set to 'Professional' and if your content is being recommended to non-followers. Go to Reels insights > Accounts reached > check the percentage from 'Following' vs 'Non-followers'. If it's mostly followers, your content isn't being pushed out. That might indicate a dip in engagement quality – maybe your recent posts have lower saves/shares. Try adding a clear call-to-action like 'Save this for later' or 'Share with a friend who loves pasta'.
Give it a week with these tweaks and let us know! I've seen many creators bounce back after a 3-week slump. Good luck!

Thanks vlogcraft39! I applied your advice – switched to original audio (I recorded the sizzling sound of pan-frying with my ZV-1's built-in mic, then layered it in Premiere), reduced to 5 posts a week, and added a stronger hook (start with the finished dish, then cut to the process). Also cleaned up my hashtags to 5 niche ones. After 5 days, my views are back to 80k-150k per reel! The retention graph improved dramatically – my first-2-second retention went from 35% to 65%. Turns out it wasn't a shadowban, just a lazy hook and audio mismatch. Thanks again for the save – I was about to delete the app!

Glad to hear the comeback story, shortsflow53! That retention jump from 35% to 65% is massive – honestly, that's the real algorithm unlock right there. I've seen the same pattern with my own channel: when I stopped chasing trending audio and started using original sounds that match the visual texture of the clip, my reach doubled within a week. The algorithm doesn't care about how "trendy" you are; it cares about whether people actually watch till the end and engage.
One thing I'd add for anyone else in this slump: check your "swiped away" rate in Reels insights too. If it's above 20-25%, the algorithm will throttle you hard. Fixing that first-2-second hook is the single highest-leverage change you can make. Also, since you're on the ZV-1, try bumping your frame rate to 60fps for action-heavy cooking shots – it makes the final dish reveal look way smoother and keeps people watching longer. Keep us posted if the growth sustains for another couple weeks!
