TikTok Reels aspect ratio: 9:16 vs 1:1 – which one actually performs better in 2026?

TikTok & Reels Created: 09.08.2026 11:17 28 Views
Hey everyone! I've been creating short-form content for about six months now, and I'm stuck on a fundamental question: should I post my Reels and TikToks in the classic 9:16 vertical format, or does the 1:1 square format still have a place? I remember seeing some older advice that square videos used to get better engagement because they took up more screen space on desktop feeds, but now everything is mobile-first. I'm also curious about how the algorithm treats different aspect ratios – does it even matter for reach? I've tested both on my own channel, but my sample size is too small to draw any real conclusions. My content is mostly talking-head style with some B-roll, so I'm not sure if that changes anything. Any data-driven insights or current best practices would be super helpful!

Great question! I've been doing short-form content for two years now, and I can tell you that 9:16 is the way to go in 2026. TikTok and Instagram Reels are designed for full-screen vertical viewing – that's what the algorithm expects. When you post 1:1, the platform has to letterbox it or blur the sides, which reduces watch time because it looks less polished. I've seen my own 9:16 videos get 2-3x more reach than square ones. Also, with the rise of full-screen ads and the focus on mobile, vertical is king. For talking-head content, you want to fill the screen with your face and text overlays – square just leaves too much empty space. Stick with 9:16, and make sure your safe zones are within the center 4:5 area to avoid UI elements like the like button and caption.
I agree with username, but I want to add some nuance. The algorithm doesn't directly penalize 1:1, but it does affect user behavior. When a video is square, it gets displayed with black bars on top and bottom in the full-screen feed, which makes it look less immersive. That can lead to lower retention, and retention is the biggest ranking signal. I've also read that TikTok's recommendation system uses the aspect ratio to predict watch time – vertical videos are more likely to be watched to completion because they're designed for mobile. For Reels, Instagram has explicitly stated that they prioritize full-screen vertical content. So, for your talking-head style, 9:16 is the safest bet. However, if you ever repost to Twitter or LinkedIn, you might want to create a 1:1 version separately, but don't compromise your main upload.
Always testing the YouTube algorithm.
Thanks username and videospark77 for the detailed replies! You both made excellent points about the algorithm and user behavior. I'm going to switch all my new uploads to 9:16 and also re-edit a few of my best-performing square videos to see if they get a second life. I'll also pay attention to the safe zones to make sure my captions aren't covered. Appreciate the help – this clears up a lot of confusion!
Creator burnout is real, take care guys.
