Reels flop after 10k followers – what am I doing wrong?

TikTok & Reels Created: 09.08.2026 03:55 32 Views
Hey everyone! I've been posting daily Reels for the past three months and my account has grown from 2k to 10k followers. But here's the problem: my recent Reels are barely getting any views. I used to get 5-10k views on average, and now I'm lucky to hit 500. My engagement rate is still around 8-10% (likes/comments/shares relative to views), but the algorithm seems to have stopped pushing my content. I've tried different formats, trending audio, and even changed my posting time. Nothing seems to work.

I'm not sure if it's the algorithm change, my content quality, or something about my account settings. I've read about the 'followers freeze' and 'ghost ban' but I don't think I've violated any guidelines. My niche is travel vlogs and I've been consistent. Has anyone else experienced this sudden drop after hitting a milestone? Any advice on how to get back on track? I'd really appreciate any insights or tips from people who've been through this.

Hey! I've been through this exact same thing. When you hit that 10k mark, Instagram often changes how they distribute your content. They start testing your content with a smaller initial audience to see if it's worth pushing to a broader one. If your first 100-200 views don't lead to strong watch time (like 70%+ retention or full replays), they pull back.

What worked for me was focusing on retention. I started using a hook in the first 0.5 seconds (like a bold text overlay or a visual teaser) and made sure my videos were under 15 seconds. Also, I noticed that posting at the exact same time every day actually hurt me – Instagram prefers when you post when your audience is actually online, so I use the 'Followers' tab in insights to see when they're most active and adjust daily. Have you checked your watch time stats?
I feel your pain. I had a similar drop after 15k. One thing that often gets overlooked is the 'share' metric. In the algorithm, shares are weighted more heavily than likes. So instead of chasing trending audio, try creating content that makes people want to tag a friend or send it to someone. For example, I do travel tips and I now end every Reel with a call-to-action like 'Tag someone who needs this!' – it boosted my shares by 300% and my views recovered within two weeks.

Also, check if you have any copyrighted music from the 'trending' list – sometimes those tracks are overused and the algorithm suppresses them because they're not niche-specific. Use smaller, emerging tracks that fit your niche, and make sure to use the 'Original Audio' feature when possible – Instagram loves that for reach.
TikTok growth is all about the first 3 seconds hook.
I agree with the others, but I'd also suggest looking at your account status. Go to Settings > Account Status and see if any of your content has been flagged for 'non-recommendable' status. I had a video with a map that had a watermark from another app, and it got restricted from recommendations without me knowing. That caused a temporary suppression.

Also, don't underestimate the power of the 'Not Interested' feedback. If your recent content is slightly different from your usual travel vlogs (maybe more vlog-style vs. tips), the algorithm might be showing it to the wrong audience. Try going back to your top-performing content style and repost a similar video to 're-train' your audience. And don't forget to engage with your followers in the comments – the algorithm picks up on that community interaction.

Thanks everyone, this is really helpful! I checked my account status and saw that one of my Reels had a 'limited recommendations' flag for using a copyrighted clip from a movie (I thought it was fair use). I removed it and also started using original audio and adding a hook in the first second. I also switched to posting when my insights show my followers are online, and I added a 'share' call-to-action. It's been a week and my views are back to 8-10k. The drop was definitely a mix of the algorithm testing me and that copyright flag. Appreciate all the tips – you guys saved my channel!
Creator burnout is real, take care guys.
