Best Way to Structure Affiliate Links in Video Descriptions Without Hurting Click-Through?

Hey everyone! I've been creating tech review videos for about a year now, and I finally got accepted into a few affiliate programs (Amazon Associates, and a couple of direct ones like for software and gear). I'm trying to figure out the best way to present these links in my video descriptions without looking too spammy or hurting my click-through rate. Right now I just dump a list of links at the bottom, but I feel like that's not ideal.

I've seen some creators use timestamps and then put the affiliate link right next to the relevant part, while others use a dedicated 'Affiliate Disclosure' section. What's the best practice for structuring these links to maximize clicks while staying compliant with FTC rules? Also, is it better to use a link shortener or a pretty link (like a branded domain) for tracking? I'm using YouTube Studio's analytics, but I want to make sure I'm not missing any key metrics. Any advice would be awesome!

Great question! I've been doing affiliate marketing for 3 years now, and the biggest change that boosted my click-through was using timestamped links. Instead of a generic list, I put the affiliate link right next to the product mention in a 'Products Mentioned' section with timestamps. For example:

Exactly, that's the problem. People are lazy; they won't scroll to find the link. Put it where they are in the video. Also, use a link shortener like geni.us for Amazon links – it gives you clean redirects and works with their API. For tracking, don't rely only on YouTube Studio; use UTM parameters on your custom links to see which videos drive conversions in Google Analytics. Finally, always put your disclosure at the top of the description, not buried. It builds trust and keeps you FTC-compliant.
Creator burnout is real, take care guys.
I second the timestamp approach, but also consider using a 'Tools I Use' page on your website (if you have one) and link to that from your description. That way you can update links without editing old videos. For direct affiliate programs, they often provide their own tracking dashboards – make sure you use those to see real-time stats. Also, don't forget to use the 'Affiliate Disclosure' feature in YouTube Studio (under Advanced settings) – it's a toggle that shows a disclosure to viewers. That's a must-have.
TikTok growth is all about the first 3 seconds hook.
One thing that helped me was using a custom domain for my affiliate links (like kit.co or a simple redirect). It looks more professional and you can brand it. For example, I use 'yourname.reviews' and then short links like 'yourname.reviews/amazon' that redirect to my Amazon affiliate link. This also helps with tracking if you use a service like Pretty Links on WordPress. But be careful: some affiliate programs have rules against cloaking, so always check their terms. Also, test different placements: I found that putting links in the first 3 lines of the description (before the 'show more' fold) increases clicks by 20%.
Thanks everyone, this is super helpful! I'm going to restructure my description with timestamped links, add a proper disclosure at the top, and start using a custom short domain for tracking. I'll also check the YouTube Studio toggle for affiliate disclosures. Appreciate the tips – I'm already seeing the potential!
