How to turn YouTube Shorts views into merch sales without being pushy?

Hey everyone! I've been posting daily Shorts for about 6 months now, and I'm finally getting consistent views (50k-200k per Short). My niche is DIY desk setups and cable management. I've set up a small merch line (mousepads, cable sleeves, and desk mats) with my brand logo, but I'm struggling to convert those views into actual sales. I've tried putting a link in my bio and mentioning it in a few Shorts, but it feels super forced and I don't want to annoy my audience.

I'm looking for organic ways to integrate my merch into my Shorts content. I know some creators do 'shop the setup' videos or use the YouTube Shopping feature, but I'm not sure what works best for Shorts specifically. Also, what's the typical conversion rate for merch from Shorts vs long-form? Any advice on how to make the pitch feel natural without being cringe? Thanks!

I feel your pain, shortsmaster92. I've been in the same boat with my photography channel. The key is to treat your merch as part of the content, not an interruption. What worked for me was creating 'behind the scenes' Shorts where I show the design process or how the merch is made. For example, you could do a time-lapse of you printing a custom mousepad or packaging an order. That builds curiosity and makes the product feel exclusive.

Also, don't underestimate the power of a strong call-to-action in the video itself. Instead of saying 'buy my merch,' say 'grab the same mousepad I'm using in this setup – link in bio.' Make it about the utility, not the sale. I've seen conversion rates of 1-2% from Shorts if you're consistent, but it takes time. I'd also recommend using YouTube's pinned comment feature to drop the link – it's less intrusive than a verbal pitch.

Totally agree with the pinned comment, but I'd add that you should leverage YouTube Shopping if you're eligible. It's a game-changer for Shorts because it lets viewers tap the product directly without leaving the app. You can tag your merch in the Shorts' product list, and it shows up as a small shopping bag icon. I've seen a 3x increase in clicks since I started using it.

For the pitch, try to integrate your merch into the 'problem-solving' angle of your niche. For instance, if you're doing a cable management Short, say something like 'this is the exact sleeve I use – it's on my storefront if you want to clean up your desk too.' That feels helpful, not salesy. Also, consider doing a dedicated 'Shop My Setup' Short once a week, but make it full of value – like a mini tour with timestamps. That way, it's content, not an ad.
TikTok growth is all about the first 3 seconds hook.
Hey everyone, thanks for the tips! I tried the pinned comment and the 'problem-solving' angle in my last few Shorts, and I already saw a small bump in clicks. I also applied for YouTube Shopping and got approved – it's been live for two days now. I think the key was to stop overthinking and just make the merch feel like a natural part of the solution I'm already providing. I'll keep testing and see what sticks. Thanks again for the help!
