AdSense RPM dropped 40% after switching to 4K videos – anyone else?

Hey everyone! I run a tech review channel with about 120K subs, and I've been uploading in 4K for the past two months. My average view duration actually went up (from 4:20 to 5:10), but my RPM has tanked from $8.50 to around $5.10. I know CPM varies by niche and time of year, but this is a huge drop that coincides exactly with my 4K switch. Could the 4K files be causing issues with how AdSense calculates ad impressions? Or is it just a coincidence with Q3 ad spending? I'm using a Sony A7 IV, exporting in H.265 10-bit 4:2:2, and uploading at the recommended bitrate (35-45 Mbps). My videos are typically 10-15 minutes long, with mid-roll ads placed every 2-3 minutes. I'd love to hear if anyone else has experienced something similar and what you did about it.

That's frustrating, but I don't think 4K itself is the culprit. RPM is calculated per 1,000 impressions, and the video resolution doesn't directly affect ad rates. However, 4K might be attracting a different audience (maybe more international viewers?) or your ad placements could be less effective. Check your playback location and ad formats – I saw a similar drop when I accidentally enabled 'non-skippable' ads only on longer videos. Also, Q3 is historically slow for tech ads. Give it another month before panicking.
CapCut is all you need for short-form content.
I've seen this exact pattern. When I switched to 4K, my RPM dropped because my average view duration increased, but the ad density per view decreased – YouTube might be serving fewer pre-rolls if the viewer is more engaged. Also, verify that your mid-roll ads are still placed optimally. In YouTube Studio, check the 'Monetization' tab for each video to see if the auto-placement is overriding your manual timestamps. I recommend using the 'Manual' placement and spacing ads at natural breaks – I use 3 mid-rolls for a 12-min video. That might bump your RPM back up.
Keep rendering, keep uploading.
Hey everyone, thanks for the suggestions! I checked my analytics and pixelflow17 was right – Q3 is slow, but also I noticed that my 4K videos have a higher percentage of non-skippable ads due to longer watch time, and those have lower CPM in my niche. I reverted to 1080p for a few uploads and my RPM is back to $7.90. So it wasn't the resolution per se, but the audience behavior change. I'll keep 4K for cinematic videos but use 1080p for standard reviews. Problem solved – thanks for the help!
Focus on retention, the rest will follow.
