Hey everyone! Just joined ShortVi – here's my story and what I hope to learn

Hi all! I'm a long-time photographer who recently made the jump into video creation. I've been shooting stills for about 8 years, but over the past few months I've been experimenting with short-form video for my travel and outdoor content. I'm excited to join this community because I feel like I've hit a plateau – my editing is basic (just cutting clips and adding music in CapCut), and my YouTube Shorts and TikTok views are stuck in the low hundreds. I'm hoping to learn more about storytelling, color grading, and how to grow an audience without burning out. I also have a full-time job, so I'm looking for efficient workflows that don't require hours of editing each day. I'm happy to share my photography knowledge in exchange for video tips! Looking forward to connecting with you all and learning from your experiences.

AdSense RPM dropped 40% after switching to 4K videos – anyone else?

Hey everyone! I run a tech review channel with about 120K subs, and I've been uploading in 4K for the past two months. My average view duration actually went up (from 4:20 to 5:10), but my RPM has tanked from $8.50 to around $5.10. I know CPM varies by niche and time of year, but this is a huge drop that coincides exactly with my 4K switch. Could the 4K files be causing issues with how AdSense calculates ad impressions? Or is it just a coincidence with Q3 ad spending? I'm using a Sony A7 IV, exporting in H.265 10-bit 4:2:2, and uploading at the recommended bitrate (35-45 Mbps). My videos are typically 10-15 minutes long, with mid-roll ads placed every 2-3 minutes. I'd love to hear if anyone else has experienced something similar and what you did about it.

How to structure a documentary-style short for YouTube without losing viewers?

<img src="/uploads/documentary-editing-timeline-premiere-pro-1785649881.jpg" alt="Editing documentary-style short video in Premiere Pro with interview clips and B-roll" class="thread-seo-image" style="width:100%; max-height:450px; object-fit:cover; border-radius:var(--radius-md); margin-bottom:20px;"> Hey everyone! I'm working on a 10-minute documentary-style video about a local street artist, and I'm struggling with the narrative structure. I want it to feel cinematic and engaging, but I'm afraid it'll come off as a boring slideshow. I've watched a lot of successful docs on YouTube, and they all seem to have this hook, build-up, and payoff, but I can't figure out how to apply that to a real person's story without scripting their every word. I've got about 20 minutes of interview footage, some B-roll of them painting, and a few time-lapses. I'm editing in Premiere Pro and have access to the full Creative Cloud suite. I'm aiming for a 'Vox-style' but with a more personal touch. Should I write a voiceover script first and then cut interviews around it, or the other way around? Also, how do you handle the 'act structure' in a short doc? Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

Where do you get high-quality, royalty-free music for YouTube without breaking the bank?

Hey everyone! I've been creating videos for a while now, but I'm stuck on one thing: music. I want to add professional-sounding tracks to my videos, but I'm on a tight budget. I've tried the YouTube Audio Library, but it feels a bit limited and overused. I've also looked into paid services like Epidemic Sound and Artlist, but they seem pricey for a hobbyist like me. I'm looking for something that is royalty-free (or at least YouTube-safe), has a good variety of genres, and doesn't cost a fortune. I've heard about sites like Free Music Archive and Incompetech, but I'm not sure about the licensing. Also, I've seen some creators use 'copyright-free' music from SoundCloud, but I'm worried about getting claims. Could you share your go-to sources for music and any tips on avoiding copyright strikes? Thanks in advance!

Best way to learn After Effects expressions for a beginner?

Hey everyone, I've been editing for a few years now and I'm comfortable with keyframes in After Effects, but I really want to level up my motion graphics game. I keep seeing these amazing kinetic typography and UI animations that use expressions, and I feel like I'm missing out. I don't have a programming background, so the whole idea of writing code scares me a bit. Can anyone recommend a good path to learn expressions from scratch? Are there any specific tutorials or courses that you found super helpful? Also, what are the most useful expressions I should start with for practical projects? I'm looking to create more dynamic lower thirds, animated infographics, and maybe some character rigging. Any advice would be awesome!

Click-Through Rate Stuck at 2% – Is My Thumbnail Strategy Broken?

<img src="/uploads/youtube-thumbnail-ctr-analytics-studio-setup-1784840846.jpg" alt="YouTube creator analyzing thumbnail click-through rate on monitor with Canva design software and Sony camera setup" class="thread-seo-image" style="width:100%; max-height:450px; object-fit:cover; border-radius:var(--radius-md); margin-bottom:20px;"> Hey everyone, I've been uploading consistently for about 6 months now, focusing on tech review tutorials. My videos average around 500 views, but my click-through rate (CTR) has been hovering at 2% for the past month. I'm using bright colors, bold text overlays, and what I thought were expressive faces, but YouTube Studio tells me my impressions are decent (10k–15k per video). I'm starting to think my thumbnail design is the bottleneck. I edit in Premiere Pro and export at 1080p 60fps. For thumbnails, I use Canva with custom 1280x720 templates. I try to follow the '3-second rule' – big subject, minimal text, high contrast. But I'm getting out-clicked by competitors who use more chaotic, meme-style thumbnails. Should I pivot to a more aggressive style, or am I missing something fundamental in the algorithm's preference? Any success stories or A/B test insights would be hugely appreciated.

How do you bounce back after a creative slump?

Hey everyone, I've been feeling completely drained lately. I used to love editing and filming, but now even opening Premiere Pro feels like a chore. I haven't posted in three weeks and my channel is starting to lose momentum. I know burnout is common, but how do you actually get back into the groove? Any practical tips for rekindling that spark without forcing it?

How to find reliable collab partners for a documentary-style travel series?

<img src="/uploads/travel-documentary-collab-filmmakers-southeast-asia-1784660541.jpg" alt="Two travel documentary filmmakers reviewing footage on a laptop in a tropical village with Sony FX6 and drone equipment" class="thread-seo-image" style="width:100%; max-height:450px; object-fit:cover; border-radius:var(--radius-md); margin-bottom:20px;"> Hey everyone! I'm planning a documentary-style travel series focused on hidden cultural spots in Southeast Asia. I have a solid script, a Sony FX6, and a basic lighting kit, but I need a co-creator who can handle drone shots, sound design, and post-production. I've tried Facebook groups and Upwork, but most people flake or don't match the creative vision. How do you vet collaborators for long-term projects? Any platforms or red flags I should know? Also, I'm considering using a revenue-share model (50/50 split on YouTube ad revenue and sponsorships) instead of upfront payment, since the budget is tight. Has anyone successfully done this for a series? I'd love to hear about contracts, milestones, or tools like Notion or Frame.io that helped keep things organized.

Best royalty-free music libraries for cinematic vlogs in 2026?

<img src="/uploads/royalty-free-music-editing-workspace-2026-1784553018.jpg" alt="Video editor&#039;s workspace with Premiere Pro timeline and royalty-free music library website" class="thread-seo-image" style="width:100%; max-height:450px; object-fit:cover; border-radius:var(--radius-md); margin-bottom:20px;"> Hey everyone! I'm a travel vlogger trying to step up my game with more cinematic music. I've been using YouTube's Audio Library, but I feel like the tracks are getting stale and overused. I'm looking for something with more emotional depth and orchestral swells, but I can't afford a $50/month subscription right now. I've heard about Epidemic Sound and Artlist, but are there any hidden gems that offer high-quality cinematic tracks for a one-time fee or a lower monthly cost? Also, do any of these libraries offer stems or alternate versions so I can mix them in my timeline? I use Premiere Pro 2025 if that matters. Thanks!
