AdSense RPM Dropping After Switching to Shorts – Need Help

AdSense & Creator Funds Created: 03.08.2026 11:49 1 Views
Hey everyone, I've been running a YouTube channel for about two years now, mostly long-form content in the tech niche. I recently started posting Shorts too, and while my views have skyrocketed, my AdSense RPM has taken a nosedive. Last month my RPM was around $4.50 on long-form, but now it's sitting at $0.80 across the whole channel. I know Shorts pay less, but this seems extreme. Is there a way to keep posting Shorts without tanking my overall revenue? Or should I just separate them into a different channel? Any advice would be appreciated.

That RPM drop is totally normal when you mix Shorts with long-form. Shorts RPM typically ranges from $0.05 to $0.15 per 1,000 views, while long-form can be $2-$10 depending on niche. If your Shorts are generating hundreds of thousands of views, they'll drag your average RPM way down. The key is to look at RPM separately for each content type. In YouTube Studio, go to Analytics > Content > see the 'Shorts' tab and compare the RPM there vs. your long-form videos. You'll see that your long-form RPM hasn't actually changed. If you want to keep both, just monitor them separately. If you're really concerned about revenue, you could move Shorts to a separate channel, but that might slow down your growth since Shorts are a great discovery tool. Also, make sure your Shorts are monetized correctly – you need 1,000 subscribers and 10 million Shorts views in 90 days to qualify for the Shorts bonus fund (though that's separate from AdSense).

Thanks for the explanation! I checked my analytics and you're right – my long-form RPM is still around $4.50, and the Shorts RPM is only $0.10. That makes sense now. I think I'll keep posting Shorts for growth but focus more on long-form for revenue. I'll also start using the 'Sort by' feature in YouTube Studio to filter by content type so I don't panic every time I see the overall RPM. Appreciate the help!
