Hey everyone! I've been editing 4K footage for a client project and I'm hitting a wall with performance. My rig is a Ryzen 9 7950X, RTX 4090, 64GB RAM, and I'm editing from a fast NVMe SSD. Yet, in Premiere Pro 2026 (version 26.x), the timeline stutters like crazy when I scrub or play back. I've tried setting the preview resolution to 1/4, but it still feels laggy. I've also cleared my media cache and set it to a separate SSD. Is there something new in the 2026 update that I'm missing? Or is there a known issue with certain codecs? I'm editing Sony FX3 footage in XAVC S-I 4K (10-bit 4:2:2) and also some ProRes 422 HQ from a Ninja V. Any tips to make this buttery smooth would be a lifesaver!
Why does my 4K timeline stutter in Premiere Pro 2026 despite a beefy PC?

That's a classic symptom of codec inefficiency, not your hardware. XAVC S-I is intraframe, but it's still heavily compressed 10-bit 4:2:2, which is tough on decoding. ProRes 422 HQ is better, but the real culprit might be that you're not using hardware decoding properly. In Premiere Pro 2026, there's a new preference under **Media > Hardware Decoding** that lets you force CUDA for all codecs. Make sure it's set to 'CUDA' not 'Auto' – sometimes it defaults to a less optimal path. Also, check if your sequence settings match your footage exactly (frame size, frame rate, etc.). Mismatches cause extra processing.
Another pro tip: create **proxy files** using the 'ProRes Proxy' preset (or 'H.264 Proxy' if you want smaller) – they're not just for editing, they also improve timeline smoothness dramatically. Generate them via the Project panel, and toggle proxies on/off with the 'Toggle Proxies' button. Finally, try setting your **Playback Resolution** to '1/8' during heavy scrubbing – in 2026, there's also a new 'Dynamic' mode that automatically adjusts resolution based on system load. Give that a shot!

Thanks editorwizard92! Forcing CUDA decoding and creating ProRes proxies made a night-and-day difference. I also switched the playback resolution to 'Dynamic' and now scrubbing is buttery smooth even at 4K. I never realized the hardware decoding setting was set to 'Auto' – that was the bottleneck. Appreciate the detailed help, you saved my deadline!
