Best way to color match Sony S-Log3 to Canon C-Log3 in DaVinci Resolve?

Video Editing & Software Created: 10.08.2026 03:30 32 Views
Hey everyone, I'm a run-and-gun documentarian and I just picked up a Sony FX3 to pair with my Canon C70. I love the image from both, but I'm struggling to get them to match in post when I'm cutting between angles. I'm shooting in S-Log3/S-Gamut3.Cine on the Sony and C-Log3/Cinema Gamut on the Canon, and I'm grading in DaVinci Resolve Studio 18.6. Right now I'm just using the built-in color space transform (CST) to convert each clip to Rec.709, but the skin tones and overall contrast still look noticeably different. What's the best workflow to get a consistent look across both cameras? Should I be using a specific color chart or LUT? Any advice would be appreciated!

Hey! Thanks for reaching out. The CST is a great starting point, but you're right that it won't get you a perfect match—it's designed to get you into a standard color space, not to match cameras to each other. Here's a workflow that works well for mixed-log footage:

1. **Use a color chart**: Shoot a 24-patch X-Rite ColorChecker or a DSC Labs chart with both cameras under the same lighting. This gives you a reference to build a custom 3D LUT or use Resolve's Color Warper to match.
2. **Set up your CST correctly**: For the Sony, input color space: S-Gamut3.Cine / S-Log3, and for Canon, input color space: Canon Cinema Gamut / C-Log3. Output to Rec.709 Gamma 2.4. But don't stop there—use the "Output Tone Mapping" option set to "DaVinci" to help with highlight rolloff.
3. **Match in a single node**: After the CST, add a node and use the Color Warper or the HDR palette to align the skin tones and neutrals. You can use the scopes (especially the vector scope) to match the skin tone line.
4. **Consider a custom LUT**: Some creators use a LUT like Phantom LUTs or Juan Melara's Sony-to-ARRI, but for Canon, you might need a different one. A custom LUT from your color chart will be most accurate.

Let me know if you need more details on the Color Warper approach!
I've been in your shoes—mixing Sony and Canon is a pain, but it's doable. Here's my method after the CST:

- **Match the black level and contrast first**: Use the Lift and Gamma controls to get the black and white points to match on a waveform. The Sony tends to have a bit more contrast in S-Log3, so you might need to lift the blacks slightly on the Canon.
- **Use the vector scope for skin tones**: Put the skin tone line at around 30 degrees (or whatever your reference is). I usually create a power window on the face and use the Hue vs Hue curve to nudge the Sony's skin tones to match the Canon's.
- **Don't forget the saturation**: Often the gamut difference makes the Sony look more saturated in greens and the Canon more in reds. Use the Hue vs Sat curve to balance.
- **Test with a side-by-side split screen**: In Resolve, you can use the Split Screen mode in the viewer to see both clips simultaneously. That makes it much easier to compare.

One more tip: if you're shooting interviews, try to use the same lens or at least similar focal lengths to minimize differences in color rendering. Good luck!
Keep rendering, keep uploading.
Thanks for the responses! I tried the color chart and the Color Warper approach, and it worked like a charm. I also used the waveform to match the black levels, and now the footage cuts together seamlessly. I appreciate the help—this community is awesome!
