Hey everyone, I've been creating videos for about 8 months now, and my channel is just not growing. I have around 400 subscribers, and my views are stuck at 200-300 per video. I'm trying to use YouTube Analytics to figure out what's wrong, but I feel overwhelmed by all the metrics. What should I focus on first? Is it CTR, average view duration, or something else?

I've watched countless tutorials, but they all say different things. Some say CTR is king, others say retention is everything. I've also tried changing my thumbnails and titles, but nothing seems to move the needle. Could you guys share your workflow for analyzing a channel's performance? I'd love to know what metrics you check daily, weekly, or monthly, and how you decide what to improve next. Thanks in advance!

Hey pixelflow17, I feel your pain. I've been through the same phase. First, don't try to look at everything at once. Start with the 'Reach' tab in YouTube Studio. Look at your 'Impressions CTR' – if it's below 4%, your thumbnails/titles aren't compelling enough. If it's above 6%, then your packaging is fine, but your retention is killing you. Then check 'Average view duration' for each video, but don't compare across videos – compare to similar length videos. A good benchmark is 50% or more for videos under 5 minutes, but for longer ones, 30-40% is solid. Also, check your 'Traffic sources' – if most views are from 'Browse' or 'Suggested', that's good; if they're from 'External' only, you might not be getting recommended. I'd also recommend checking 'Returning viewers' vs 'New viewers' – if you have high returning but low new, you're not reaching new audiences. Hope this helps!
Creator burnout is real, take care guys.
Great points from vlogmaker90. I'd add that you should also look at the 'Audience retention' graph for each video, not just the average. Look for the 'relative retention' compared to similar videos – that's a goldmine. You'll see exactly where viewers drop off. If you have a spike at the start, good, but if it dips after the first 30 seconds, you might be starting too slow. Also, check your 'Intro length' – if you have a long intro, cut it. Another thing: don't ignore your 'End screens' and 'Cards' analytics. They show if your CTAs are working. And for growth, I'd say focus on one metric per video – pick CTR or retention – and experiment with changes. Also, check your 'Impressions' – if they're low (like under 1k), YouTube isn't showing your video to many people, so work on SEO and packaging. If impressions are high but CTR is low, fix your thumbnails. If CTR is good but views are still low, your retention might be hurting your distribution. You got this!

Exactly. I've seen channels with 10% CTR but only 30% retention, and they get stuck. One thing I'd add is to use the 'Content' tab in Analytics to sort your videos by 'Average view duration' and 'Impressions CTR' side by side. Then look for outliers – videos that perform well in one but not the other. That tells you what to replicate. Also, don't forget to check your 'Realtime' analytics when you publish – it shows you the initial response. But don't obsess over the first hour; the algorithm takes time. Another pro tip: look at your 'Subscribers gained' vs 'Subscribers lost' – if you're gaining from one video but losing overall, maybe your content is inconsistent. Also, use the 'Compare' feature to see how your latest videos stack up against your channel average. And for the struggle, remember that 400 subs in 8 months is not bad – many channels take a year to see growth. Keep experimenting!
Focus on retention, the rest will follow.
Thank you all so much for the detailed advice! I spent the afternoon going through my Analytics and I found that my CTR is around 3.5%, and my average view duration is only about 35% for my 8-minute videos. I also noticed that my traffic is mostly 'Browse' but my impressions are low. I'm going to focus on improving my thumbnails and titles first, and also try to tighten my intros. I'll also start using the 'Compare' feature to track progress. This was super helpful – I feel like I have a clear action plan now. Thanks again, everyone!
