Hey everyone! I've been a silent reader on ShortVi for about a year now, soaking up all the amazing knowledge here. I finally decided to create an account and introduce myself properly. I'm a hobbyist filmmaker from Portland, Oregon, and I've been making short vlogs and travel videos for my personal YouTube channel (currently at 2.3k subs) for the past three years. I mostly shoot on a Sony A7 IV with a 24-70mm f/2.8 GM lens, and I edit in DaVinci Resolve Studio on a MacBook Pro M1 Max.

I'm here to learn more about improving my storytelling, especially how to structure a video to keep retention high. I also want to dive deeper into color grading – I've been using the standard Rec.709 workflow but I'm curious about ACES and HDR. My dream is to eventually turn this into a side income, so any advice on monetization or growing a niche is super welcome. Looking forward to being an active member and giving back what I can!

Welcome to the community, pixelflow28! That's a solid setup – the A7 IV is a beast for hybrid shooting. I'm also on Resolve Studio (since v18) and I can tell you, diving into ACES is a game-changer if you shoot in S-Log3. Start with the ACEScct transform and use the DaVinci color space transform (CST) to convert from S-Gamut3.Cine/S-Log3 to ACES AP0. It gives you much better highlight rolloff and color consistency across cameras. For HDR, you'll need to be careful with your scopes – aim for around 1000 nits peak for YouTube, and use the HDR palette. But don't rush; get comfortable with the color warper first. What do you mostly shoot – nature or urban?

Focus on retention, the rest will follow.

Welcome! Great to see another Sony shooter. I've been using the A7S III for the last two years, and I've found that the key to retention is hooking the viewer in the first 15 seconds. For structure, try the 'three-act' approach: set up the expectation, deliver the payoff, and then add a twist or a reflection. Also, don't underestimate the power of a good audio mix – even if your video is 4K, muddy audio will kill retention. I always use a Rode VideoMic NTG for on-camera and a Zoom H6 for ambient sound. Are you using any external recorder?

Hey pixelflow28, welcome! For storytelling, I'd recommend studying Casey Faris's videos on pacing – he's got a great series on narrative arcs in Resolve. Also, try using the 'J-cut' technique in your edits to keep the video flowing: have the audio of the next clip start a few frames before the video cut. This creates a subconscious continuity that keeps viewers engaged. On monetization, once you hit 1k subs and 4k watch hours, you can apply for the YouTube Partner Program. But also consider Patreon or affiliate marketing for your gear – I've earned a decent side income with Amazon affiliate links in my descriptions. What's your niche exactly?

Welcome aboard! I'm a big fan of the A7 IV's 10-bit 4:2:2 output – that's perfect for color grading. If you want to experiment with HDR, I'd suggest shooting in HLG3 or S-Log3 with the Sony's built-in LUTs. I've been using HLG for my travel videos because it requires less post-processing and still gives that pop. For DaVinci, make sure you set your project color science to 'DaVinci YRGB Color Managed' and choose 'HDR Rec.2020' as the output color space. Then use a CST from S-Log3 to Rec.2020. It's a bit of a learning curve, but the results are stunning. Also, don't forget to calibrate your monitor – I use a SpyderX Pro. What are your favorite locations to shoot in Portland?

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and all the great advice! I really appreciate the tips on ACES, J-cuts, and HDR workflows. I've been shooting mostly urban scenes – like the Pearl District and the waterfront – but I want to branch into more nature stuff this summer. I'll definitely try the color managed workflow with CSTs, and I'm going to look up Casey Faris's videos. I've also started using a Zoom H1n for ambient audio, so I'll work on better sound design. This community is already proving to be super helpful – I'm glad I finally introduced myself!
