Hey everyone! I run a small tech review channel and I've been stuck at around 10k subscribers for a while. Last week, I uploaded a video that was performing okay for the first 24 hours – about 2k impressions and a 4% CTR. I thought I could boost it by optimizing the title and thumbnail to something more clickable, so I changed both after the first day. Almost immediately, my impressions plummeted to under 400 per day, and the video has basically stopped being recommended. I've heard that changing metadata can reset your algorithm ranking, but I didn't think it would be this drastic. Is this a common issue? Should I revert back to the original title and thumbnail, or wait it out? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Why did my YouTube impressions drop 80% after I changed my video title and thumbnail?

Yeah, that's a real thing. YouTube's algorithm interprets a title/thumbnail change as a signal that your content might not match the original intent, so it re-tests the video with a smaller audience. It's not permanent, but it can feel like a reset. I'd suggest reverting to the original title and thumbnail if they were performing better. I've done this before and the impressions usually recover within 48-72 hours. Also, check your audience retention – if that's solid, the algorithm will likely pick it back up.

I agree with reverting, but also consider that the CTR might have been the issue. A 4% CTR is decent, but if the new thumbnail is actually less engaging, that could be why impressions dropped – the algorithm saw low CTR on the new test group and throttled it. Make sure your new thumbnail isn't too cluttered or misleading. Also, don't change metadata more than once every few days. Let the algorithm stabilize. If you revert, give it a week before making any other tweaks.
Always testing the YouTube algorithm.

One more thing – check your traffic sources in YouTube Studio. If the video was getting a lot of browse or suggested traffic, changing the title/thumbnail can disrupt that because the algorithm uses those signals to match content to viewer interests. Reverting is your best bet, but also consider adding a pinned comment or a card to the video to encourage engagement, which can help re-trigger the algorithm. And next time, test new titles/thumbnails using the 'Test & Compare' feature in YouTube Studio – it's a game-changer for avoiding this exact problem.

Thanks everyone! I reverted the title and thumbnail to the originals about 6 hours ago, and impressions are already creeping back up – now at 1.5k for the day. I'll definitely use the Test & Compare feature next time instead of making risky changes. Appreciate the quick help!
