Why did my Shorts views drop 80% after consistent posting? Need advice on algorithm reset

Analytics & Growth Created: 01.08.2026 11:51 4 Views
I've been posting daily Shorts for about 3 months now, and my channel was growing steadily. I went from 500 views per video to an average of 5k-10k, and a couple even hit 50k. But in the last 2 weeks, my views have plummeted to under 1k per video, even though I haven't changed anything about my content or editing style. I'm using the same hashtags, similar hooks, and posting at the same time. It feels like the algorithm just stopped pushing my content. I'm getting really discouraged. Has anyone else experienced this sudden drop? Is it a shadowban or some kind of algorithm reset? I've heard about the 'Shorts feed decay' but I'm not sure what to do. I've tried posting at different times, but nothing seems to work. I'm thinking about taking a break, but I'm afraid that will hurt my channel even more. Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated!

This is a classic case of the algorithm testing your audience retention. When you post consistently, YouTube's system starts to show your Shorts to a broader audience. If your retention or swipe-away rate dips even slightly, the algorithm pulls back the distribution. It's not a shadowban, it's more like a reset. I've seen this happen to many creators. The key is to analyze your retention graph in YouTube Studio. Look at the 'Average view duration' and 'Viewed vs swiped away' metrics. If you see a drop in the first 2 seconds, your hook is failing. Try to add a pattern interrupt or a visual change in the first frame. Also, check if your content is too repetitive – even if you think it's the same, the audience might be getting bored. I'd suggest taking a 2-3 day break to let the algorithm recalibrate, then come back with a fresh concept that's slightly different from your usual style. That often triggers a new wave of testing.
CapCut is all you need for short-form content.
I totally get the frustration. I had a similar drop in November last year. What worked for me was to do a 'content pivot' – I changed my niche slightly (from gaming highlights to gaming tips) and that reset the algorithm's perception of my channel. Also, don't underestimate the power of the 'Shorts feed' refresh. Sometimes the algorithm is just showing your previous Shorts to the same audience, and they've already seen them. When you post a new Short, it competes with your older ones. To counter that, you can try to 'unlist' or delete your underperforming Shorts (those with less than 500 views) to clean up your channel. That might help the algorithm focus on your new content. Also, check if your videos are being pushed to the 'Subscriptions' feed vs the 'Shorts' feed – you can see that in the 'Traffic source' report. If most of your views come from 'Subscriptions', that means the algorithm isn't recommending you to new viewers. You need to boost your 'Browse features' and 'Suggested videos' traffic. One trick is to add a 'series' playlist and pin it to your channel page – that encourages binge-watching, which the algorithm loves.
Creator burnout is real, take care guys.
I'm a sound designer, and I've seen many creators overlook the audio aspect when they hit a plateau. In Shorts, the audio is not just background – it's a discovery mechanism. If you're using the same trending sound over and over, the algorithm might be deprioritizing you because that sound is now oversaturated. Check the 'Audio' section in YouTube Studio for your recent Shorts. See which sounds are driving the most views. If your old sounds are dead, switch to new trending sounds that are relevant to your niche. Also, make sure your audio is clear and has a strong beat drop or hook at the start – that keeps people watching. Another thing: if you're using copyrighted music, that can limit your reach in some countries. I'd recommend using royalty-free tracks from the YouTube Audio Library that are specifically marked as 'Shorts-friendly'. And don't forget to add sound effects – a whoosh or a pop at the start can increase retention by 10% in my experience.
Focus on retention, the rest will follow.
Thanks everyone for the insights! I checked my analytics and you were right – my average view duration dropped from 95% to 70% in the last two weeks, and my 'swiped away' rate went up. I think my content was getting too formulaic. I'm going to take a 3-day break, then come back with a fresh concept and a new trending sound. I'll also clean up my underperforming Shorts as you suggested. I'm feeling much more optimistic now. Thanks again for the help!
