Staring at a blank timeline for hours – how do you push through creative block?

Hey everyone, I've been running a documentary-style channel for about two years now, and lately I'm hitting a wall that I can't seem to climb. I sit down to edit, open Premiere, and just stare at the empty timeline for hours. I have all the footage, a rough script, but the moment I try to assemble something, my brain goes blank. I end up watching YouTube or doom-scrolling instead. It's not that I don't have ideas – I do – but the execution feels paralyzed. I've tried taking breaks, changing my workspace, even switching to DaVinci Resolve for a fresh UI, but nothing sticks. Has anyone else dealt with this? What actually helped you break through that initial inertia? I'm worried this is more than just a slump and might be burnout creeping in.

Man, I've been there. What helped me was breaking the 'blank page' fear by starting with something stupidly small. I don't try to edit the whole video. I just open the project, drag one clip onto the timeline, and cut it down to the best 3 seconds. That's it. No pressure. Once that first edit is done, I feel like I've already 'started', and the rest flows easier. Also, try turning off your internet while editing – that kills the doom-scroll temptation. Give it a shot for 10 minutes.
Always testing the YouTube algorithm.

This is solid. I'd add: set a 5-minute timer and just assemble a rough string-out – no trimming, no effects, just every clip in order. Use markers for where you'll add b-roll later. The goal is to get a skeleton, not a polished edit. Also, check your sleep and caffeine intake. I realized I was running on 5 hours and 4 cups of coffee, which was wrecking my focus. I switched to a single black tea in the morning and fixed my sleep schedule – my edit sessions went from 2 hours of staring to 45 minutes of actual work.

Thanks both. I tried studiozone98's method today – I literally just dropped one clip, trimmed it, then added a second. Within 20 minutes I had a rough cut of the first segment. The timer trick from studiocore30 also helped because I stopped overthinking. I think I was putting too much pressure on myself to make every frame perfect from the start. I'm going to keep the internet off and use a timer for the next week. Really appreciate the practical advice – this thread saved my editing session. Marking as solved.

Yo, this thread is gold. I've been dealing with the same wall lately. One thing that's been a game changer for me in 2026 is using AI-assisted string-out tools. I know, I know, some people hate the AI hype, but hear me out. I use a plugin now that automatically transcribes my footage and lets me just type out a rough script. It then assembles a timeline with all the matching clips in order of what I typed. It's not perfect, and you still have to trim and reorder, but it completely kills the blank timeline anxiety because there's already something there. It's like having a first draft of the edit done in 30 seconds. I still manually refine everything, but it breaks that initial paralysis.

Also, studiocore30, your point about sleep is huge. I used to think I could power through burnout with sheer will, but my edit quality was trash. I switched to a blue light blocker on my monitor and started taking a 20-minute walk before I sit down to edit. It sounds simple, but it resets my brain from "staring at a screen" mode to "creative work" mode. Anyone else tried any weird pre-edit rituals that help?
Keep rendering, keep uploading.
Hey focushub54, that AI string-out plugin sounds wild. I’ve been hesitant to jump on that train because I worry it’ll make me lazy with storytelling, but if it just gets a rough assembly going, that might be exactly what I need to break the paralysis. What’s the plugin called? I’m on Premiere Pro—does it work with that, or is it a standalone thing?

Also, totally seconding the pre-edit ritual idea. I started doing 10 minutes of box breathing before I open my project. It sounds super woo-woo, but it drops my heart rate and stops that frantic “I have to make this perfect” panic before it starts. I pair it with a strict “no checking analytics or comments until the first rough cut is done” rule. That alone saved my sanity. Have you tried anything like that, or do you just go straight into the AI assembly?
Creator burnout is real, take care guys.
The AI string-out tool I mentioned is called ScriptCut – it's a standalone plugin that works with both Premiere and Resolve through a bridge app. It's been around since late 2025, but they just dropped a big update last month that finally supports multi-cam footage, which was my main gripe with it before. You still have to do all the real storytelling yourself, but it's basically a glorified assembly assistant. I've been using it for rough cuts only, then I go back and re-cut everything manually once I've got the skeleton. It hasn't made me lazy – if anything, it's freed up mental energy for the creative decisions that actually matter.

As for the breathing thing, I haven't tried box breathing yet, but I do a version of that "no analytics until first cut" rule – I've got my phone on a different floor of my apartment during edit sessions. The walk before editing has been my biggest unlock though. I think it's less about the walk itself and more about creating a physical separation between "consuming content" mode and "creating" mode. Might have to steal your breathing technique and layer it on top – sounds like a solid combo.
TikTok growth is all about the first 3 seconds hook.
