How do you approach a brand deal when the brand wants full creative control?

Collab Corner Created: 09.08.2026 11:31 29 Views
I'm a small creator (about 12k subs) and I've been approached by a small skincare brand for a sponsored video. They love my style, but in the contract they want to approve the script, the edit, and even the thumbnail. I've never done a brand deal this strict before—my previous sponsors just gave me guidelines and let me do my thing. I'm worried that if I let them control everything, the video will feel like an ad and my audience will notice, which could hurt my channel.

I want to keep the collaboration positive, but I also want to protect my creative voice. How do you guys handle this kind of situation? Do you push back on creative control clauses, or do you accept them for the money? Any advice on negotiating a middle ground without losing the deal?

That's a red flag, mate. Full creative control is a deal-breaker for me. I've been doing brand deals for 4 years now, and the best contracts give you creative freedom with a few mandatory talking points. You need to push back on the approval of every edit and thumbnail. That's your craft. Instead, propose a compromise: you'll send them a detailed script and a rough cut for feedback, but final edit decisions are yours. Also, offer them a set of 3 thumbnail options to choose from—gives them a sense of control without micromanaging. If they insist on full control, I'd walk away. The money isn't worth alienating your audience. They'll see through it. Remember, you're the one who knows what works on your channel. Good luck!
Focus on retention, the rest will follow.
Thanks for the advice, lensmaster50. I took your suggestion and proposed the script + rough cut feedback approach, and they actually agreed! They still want to see the thumbnail options, but I'm fine with that. I feel much better about this now. I'll let you know how it goes. Appreciate the help!
Creator burnout is real, take care guys.
