Hello from a sound designer turning to video – looking for workflow advice
Hey everyone! I'm a sound designer with 10+ years in music production and podcast editing, but I've been slowly moving into video creation for my own channel. I finally have a decent setup: a Sony A7 IV, a Rode NTG, and a decent PC with an RTX 3080. I've been editing in DaVinci Resolve (free version) because I love the color tools, but I'm hitting a wall with my workflow. I'm used to Pro Tools and Reaper for audio, so the video editing timeline feels clunky to me. My main questions are: 1) Should I switch to Premiere Pro or stick with Resolve for hybrid audio/video work? I've heard that Resolve's Fairlight is actually great for audio, but I'm not sure if it's worth learning. 2) What's your go-to process for syncing audio and video, especially when you have multiple takes? I've been doing it manually and it's eating up so much time. 3) Any tips for organizing a project when you're dealing with lots of B-roll and sound effects? I feel like my media bins are a mess. I'm also curious about how you all handle exporting for YouTube – I keep getting files that are too big or look softer than I'd like. Any advice would be super appreciated! I'm eager to learn from this community and eventually share my own tips once I get the hang of things.
Best AI tools for automating YouTube title and thumbnail testing in 2026?
Hey everyone! I've been running a faceless documentary channel for about two years now, and I'm at the point where I need to scale my workflow without burning out. I spend way too much time manually A/B testing titles and thumbnails. I've heard about AI tools that can predict CTR or even generate variations automatically, but I'm not sure what's actually worth the money in 2026. I'm currently using TubeBuddy's SEO tools and Canva for thumbnails, but I want something more integrated with YouTube Studio's native testing feature. I'm looking for recommendations on AI-driven tools that can either generate multiple title/thumbnail options based on my video content, or analyze audience behavior to suggest the best combo. Ideally, something that works with YouTube's built-in 'Test & Compare' feature, or at least exports data in a way I can use. My budget is around $50-100/month. What are you all using, and what's been your experience? Any hidden gems or overhyped junk I should avoid?
How do you keep your creative spark alive after years of content creation?
Hey everyone, I've been making videos for about five years now, and I'm hitting a wall. I used to wake up excited to film and edit, but lately everything feels like a chore. I'm not burned out in the sense of being exhausted—I still love the craft—but the initial spark that made me start is fading. My uploads are becoming more formulaic, and I find myself recycling ideas just to keep the channel alive. I know this is a common thing in creative fields, but I'm curious how you all deal with it. Do you have any rituals, exercises, or mindset shifts that help you stay inspired? Or do you take breaks and come back stronger? I'm open to any advice—whether it's about changing your workflow, collaborating with others, or even trying a completely different niche for a while. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
How to handle collab offers when your niche is too small?
Hey everyone, I run a small channel focused on DIY acoustic treatment for home studios. I have about 8k subs, and I've started getting collab offers from bigger channels in the music production space. The problem is, my niche is very specific—acoustic panels, bass traps, diffusers—and most of these offers are for generic 'music production tips' videos or gear reviews that don't really fit my audience. I don't want to alienate my viewers by posting off-topic content, but I also don't want to miss out on growth opportunities. How do you handle collab offers that are tangentially related but not a perfect match? Do you ever accept them and just make it work, or do you politely decline and suggest a different angle? I'm also curious about how to pitch a more tailored collab idea to a bigger channel without sounding pushy. Any advice would be awesome!
Showcasing My First 3-Minute Documentary-Style Short – Feedback Welcome!
Hey everyone! I've been lurking here for a while and finally finished my first proper documentary-style short film. It's a 3-minute piece about a local blacksmith who's been forging knives for 40 years. I shot it on a Sony A7S III with a 24-70mm f/2.8, using natural window light and a simple LED panel for fill. Edited in DaVinci Resolve 18.6 with some basic color grading (teal-orange look) and a subtle film grain overlay. I'm really proud of the result, but I'd love some honest feedback on pacing, sound design, and whether the storytelling flows well. I've been focusing on YouTube Shorts for quick engagement, but this is my first attempt at a longer narrative piece. Any tips on how to present this in my portfolio or where to share it for maximum visibility? Let me know what you think!
Best budget-friendly softbox setup for indoor talking-head videos?
Hey everyone! I'm a solo creator starting a tech review channel, and I'm filming indoors in a small home office. I've been using a single cheap ring light, but the shadows are killing me and the footage looks flat. I want to upgrade to a proper softbox setup without breaking the bank (ideally under $300 for everything). I've seen a lot of talk about three-point lighting, but I'm not sure what to buy. Should I go with a two-light kit or three? I also need to consider that my room is a bit small, so I don't want huge softboxes that take up space. What are the best budget-friendly options that still give that soft, professional look? Any advice on placement and modifiers would be super helpful too!
Best OBS settings for a 2-PC streaming setup with RTMP?
Hey everyone, I'm setting up a 2-PC streaming rig for the first time. I've got a gaming PC (RTX 3080, i9-10900K) and a dedicated streaming PC (i7-9700K, GTX 1660 Ti) that will handle encoding and streaming via RTMP to Twitch. I'm planning to use OBS Studio on both machines, with the gaming PC sending a full-screen preview via NDI or capture card to the streaming PC. I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the settings – bitrate, encoder, keyframe interval, etc. I want to stream at 1080p60 with the best quality possible without hitting any hiccups. What are the recommended OBS settings for the streaming PC encoder (x264 vs NVENC) and for the game PC's OBS output? Also, should I use CBR or VBR, and what bitrate should I aim for given Twitch's recommended limits? Any advice on minimizing latency between the two PCs would be great too.
Best Mobile Editing App for 4K HDR Footage on a Galaxy S23 Ultra?
Hey everyone! I've been shooting a lot of 4K HDR footage on my Galaxy S23 Ultra for my travel vlogs, and I'm struggling to find a mobile editing app that handles it smoothly. I've tried LumaFusion and CapCut, but LumaFusion sometimes stutters on the timeline, and CapCut's HDR output seems to wash out colors when I export. I'm looking for something that can handle the dynamic range without killing my phone's battery or overheating it. I'm also curious about color grading on mobile – do any of you use LUTs directly on your phone? I've heard about apps like VN Video Editor and KineMaster, but I'm not sure if they support 10-bit or HDR properly. My workflow is usually: shoot on the S23 Ultra, edit on the go, then upload to YouTube – so I need something that exports in a format that doesn't get mangled by YouTube's compression. Any recommendations or tips would be awesome!
Finding reliable collab partners for documentary-style urban exploration videos
Hey everyone! I've been running a channel focused on documentary-style urban exploration (abandoned buildings, forgotten infrastructure) for about two years now. I've got a solid workflow for solo shoots, but I'm hitting a wall when it comes to collaborations. I've tried reaching out to a few similar-sized creators in my niche, but most don't respond or flake at the last minute. I'm not looking for shoutouts or cross-promo gimmicks—I want genuine co-production partnerships where we can combine skills (I'm strong on cinematography, they might be strong on research or storytelling). How do you find reliable collab partners who are actually serious about creating something together? Do you use specific platforms, communities, or just cold DMs? Also, if you've done successful collabs, what was your vetting process and how did you structure the project (roles, deadlines, revenue share if any)? I'm in the LA area but open to remote collabs with editors or researchers from anywhere. Any advice would be hugely appreciated!
Why is my 4K export in DaVinci Resolve 18.6 stuttering on a high-end PC?
Hey everyone, I'm at my wit's end here. I just upgraded to a Ryzen 9 7950X, 64GB of RAM, and an RTX 4090, yet when I export a 4K 60fps project in DaVinci Resolve 18.6, the export preview stutters and the render times are way slower than expected. I'm using the H.265 codec, 60 Mbps, with the 'High' quality setting. My source footage is from a Sony A7S III in 10-bit 4:2:2. I've already updated my GPU drivers, set the timeline to 'DaVinci Resolve' color space, and I've tried both 'GPU' and 'CPU' render modes. Is there something I'm missing? I've seen folks with lesser rigs export faster. Any help would be massively appreciated!
How to Find and Vet Reliable Collaborators Without Getting Ghosted?
I've been creating YouTube videos for about two years now (mostly tech reviews and setup tours), and I really want to start doing collabs to grow my channel. The problem is, every time I reach out to someone via Instagram DM or email, I either get no reply or they agree and then ghost me right before the shoot. It's starting to feel like a waste of time and energy. I'm looking for practical advice on where to find serious collaborators (other creators, not brands) and how to vet them before investing hours in planning. Do you use specific platforms, Facebook groups, or just cold outreach? Also, what red flags should I look for in a potential partner? I want to make sure the next collab actually happens and benefits both of us.
CTR dropped from 8% to 3% after rebrand — is my new thumbnail style the problem?
Hey everyone, I run a tech review channel and recently rebranded my entire visual identity. I switched from bright, cluttered thumbnails with big red arrows and text to a cleaner, minimal style with softer colors and no text. I thought it would look more professional, but my CTR has tanked from a steady 8% to just 3% over the past two weeks. My impressions are actually up, but nobody is clicking. I'm wondering if the minimal look is just too bland for YouTube, or if it's something else like the timing of my uploads. I've attached a few examples of my old vs. new thumbnails. Has anyone else experienced this after a rebrand? Should I revert to the old style or try to find a middle ground? Any advice would be appreciated!
Anyone else feel like the algorithm is gaslighting them?
I've been uploading consistently for about 6 months now – same niche (budget filmmaking gear reviews), same upload schedule (Tuesday/Thursday), same thumbnail style. My analytics show a steady 15-20% CTR and 60-70% AVD, but the algorithm just refuses to push my videos to new audiences. I'm stuck at around 2.5k subs and my impressions have actually dropped 30% over the last month. YouTube Studio says my content is 'performing well' but it feels like I'm screaming into the void. Is anyone else experiencing this? I'm starting to think the algorithm is just messing with me. I've tried everything – posting at different times, changing descriptions, adding chapters, even running a couple of small ad campaigns. Nothing seems to break this plateau. What's your experience been?
Can I use a royalty-free track from YouTube Audio Library if I'm monetizing?
Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out the licensing terms for tracks in the YouTube Audio Library. I know they say 'royalty-free' but does that mean I can use them in videos that are monetized? I'm worried about getting a copyright claim or strike down the line. Specifically, I'm looking at a track that says 'Attribution not required' but I'm still not 100% sure. I've heard horror stories about creators getting flagged months after upload. Is there any catch I'm missing? I just want to make sure my channel is safe from legal issues.
After Effects 3D Camera Tracking – Footage Drifts After 10 Seconds, Any Fix?
Hey everyone, I'm working on a VFX-heavy short film shot on my Sony A7S III at 24fps with a 50mm lens. I'm using After Effects 2025's built-in 3D Camera Tracker, and it works great for the first 10 seconds—solid track points, no drift. But after that, the tracked nulls start slowly sliding off the real-world surfaces, especially on the edges of the frame. I've tried manually deleting weak track points and re-analyzing, but the drift persists. The footage has some motion blur and a bit of rolling shutter from a whip pan. Is there a setting or workflow I'm missing? Or should I jump to Mocha AE or a dedicated 3D solver like PFTrack? I'd rather not spend money if the built-in tracker can handle this with proper prep. Any tips on pre-processing the footage (like removing grain or stabilizing in a specific way) would be appreciated.
Using Copyrighted Music in Shorts – How to avoid demonetization?
Hey everyone, I'm a shorts creator focusing on travel and lifestyle content. I've been using popular songs in my shorts to boost engagement, but I'm terrified of getting hit with copyright claims or even strikes. I've heard about the YouTube Shorts library and the 'Shortify' feature, but I'm not sure if that covers everything. I also use Premiere Pro for editing – is there a way to check if a track is safe before I upload? I want to keep the energy high without risking my channel's monetization. Any tips or workflows you guys use?
TikTok algorithm suddenly tanking my views after consistent 100k+ – anyone else?
Hey everyone, I've been posting daily on TikTok for about 6 months now, and my content was consistently hitting 100k–500k views per video. I'm doing gaming montages with heavy editing (transitions, speed ramps, sync with music) and using trending sounds. Over the past 2 weeks, my views have dropped to 500–2k per post. I haven't changed my editing style, posting time, or hashtag strategy. My account is not shadowbanned (checked via status page). I'm using CapCut for editing, exporting at 1080p 60fps, and uploading directly from my phone. I'm wondering if the algorithm changed, or if I'm being flagged for reused content? I do use some gameplay clips from other creators but heavily transform them with effects and overlays. Any insights or fixes?
