YouTube Shorts algorithm 2026: How to fix sudden drop in views after consistent 100k+ per short?

YouTube & Shorts Created: 23.07.2026 03:06 71 Views
Hey everyone, I've been posting daily YouTube Shorts for about 6 months now, and my channel was growing steadily. I was consistently getting 100k-300k views per short, with a solid 70%+ swipe-away rate. But starting last week, my views have cratered to under 5k per short. Nothing changed in my content style, hashtags, or posting time. I'm using the same trending audio, same hook structure (first 2 seconds), and same editing pace.

I've checked YouTube Studio analytics and my 'Shorts feed' impressions dropped by 90%. My 'Suggested videos' impressions are actually up, but those don't convert to views. I'm wondering if the algorithm changed recently or if I got hit with some kind of shadowban. I haven't received any community guideline strikes. My channel is in the gaming niche (clips with fast commentary). Any ideas what could cause this and how to recover?

I'm using Premiere Pro for editing, exporting at 1080x1920, 60fps, H.264, with a target bitrate of 50 Mbps. Audio is recorded with a Shure MV7 into Logic Pro. I also use TubeBuddy for keyword research. My last video that performed well was a 'funny rage moment' from Valorant, 28 seconds long. The new ones are similar length and style.

Hey! This is a common pattern I've seen across many Shorts creators lately. The algorithm in early 2026 has shifted heavily toward 'retention-based distribution' rather than initial impression velocity. Your 70% swipe-away rate might actually be the issue—that means 30% of viewers are swiping away, which is decent, but YouTube now prioritizes 're-watches' and 'completion rate' over swipe-away. Check your 'average view duration' vs 'video length' in Studio. If it's below 80%, that could explain the drop.

Also, gaming clips with fast commentary can sometimes trigger the 'repetitive content' flag if you're using the same sound effects or transitions too often. Try varying your editing style—add a slow-mo section or a text overlay that changes every 3 seconds. I'd also recommend testing a 15-second short instead of 28 seconds. Shorter videos tend to get pushed harder now. Let me know your average view duration!
Focus on retention, the rest will follow.
I second what mediahub68 said about retention. But also check your 'Shorts feed' vs 'Browse features' split in Studio. If your impressions from 'Shorts feed' dropped but 'Browse features' increased, it might be a temporary algorithm recalibration. I had the same issue in December 2025 and it lasted about 10 days. During that time, I focused on posting 3 times a day (instead of once) and used a completely different audio track each time. The algorithm seemed to reward variety.

Another thing: your export settings at 60fps might be causing playback issues on some devices. YouTube Shorts at 60fps can sometimes get lower priority in the feed because it requires more bandwidth. Try exporting at 30fps for a week and see if that helps. Also, make sure you're not using any copyrighted music—even if it's 'trending audio,' sometimes the rights holder changes policies. Use YouTube's own audio library for a few shorts to test.
Write, shoot, edit, repeat.

I'm a smaller creator (20k subs) but I've been studying the Shorts algorithm obsessively. One thing that's often overlooked is the 'first 1 second' hook. In 2026, YouTube's AI analyzes micro-expressions in the first frame to determine if the video is clickable. If your Valorant clip starts with a black screen or a slow fade-in, that could hurt you. I'd recommend starting with a bright, high-contrast frame showing your face or a dramatic in-game moment immediately.

Also, have you checked your 'Shorts remix' settings? If you have 'Remix' enabled, sometimes other creators' remixes can cannibalize your original video's impressions. Turn off remixing for a few shorts and see if your original views recover. Lastly, don't forget to update your TubeBuddy tags—the trending keywords change weekly. I use 'viral gaming moments 2026' and 'funny rage comp' right now, which are performing well.

Thanks everyone for the detailed advice! I followed your suggestions:
- I checked my average view duration: it was only 65% for the last 10 shorts. I've now shortened them to 15 seconds and added a text hook in the first 0.5 seconds.
- I switched exports to 30fps and used YouTube's audio library for the last 3 shorts.
- I disabled remixing and updated my TubeBuddy tags to 'viral gaming moments 2026' and 'funny rage comp'.

Results: My latest short just hit 50k views in 2 hours! The impressions from 'Shorts feed' are back up to 80% of my total. I think the combination of shorter length, 30fps, and new audio did the trick. I'll keep testing. Really appreciate the help—this community is awesome!
