Sony A7S III vs. A7 IV for Wedding Filming – Which One Should I Invest In?

I’ve shot over 60 weddings with both bodies, so here’s my practical take. For wedding work, the A7S III’s 12MP is rarely a limitation because you’re delivering 4K or even 1080p to clients. The 4K 120fps is a game-changer for those emotional slow-motion shots during the first dance or cake cutting – it’s buttery smooth and you can push the ISO to 12800 without worrying about noise. The autofocus is also slightly more sticky in low light because the sensor has larger pixels, which makes a real difference when the couple is walking down the aisle in a dark church.

However, the A7 IV is no slouch. The 33MP gives you that extra room to crop for a 2.35:1 cinematic frame or punch in for a tight shot when you’re stuck on a single camera. The new color science is indeed better – skin tones are more natural and it’s easier to match with your A7 III as a second camera. The flip-out screen is also a lifesaver for low-angle gimbal shots. But here’s the catch: the 4K 60fps on the A7 IV is a 1.5x crop, which can be annoying if you’re using a wide-angle lens. And the rolling shutter is more pronounced than on the A7S III.

If you do a lot of run-and-gun solo work, I’d say the A7S III is worth the extra money because low-light reliability and 120fps are the two features that will save you in the most critical moments. But if you also do corporate work where you need high-res stills or heavy cropping, the A7 IV might be the smarter investment. I’d also suggest renting both for a weekend and testing them in a real wedding scenario – that’s what I did, and it made the decision obvious for me.

I think I’m leaning more toward the A7S III now because I do a lot of handheld work in dimly lit reception halls, and the 120fps is something I know I’ll use constantly for those cinematic slow-mo transitions. The crop on the A7 IV’s 4K60 would drive me crazy since my go-to lens is a 24-70mm f/2.8, and I often need the full field of view.

I also looked into the rolling shutter specs – the A7S III reads out at about 8.8ms, while the A7 IV is around 24ms, so that’s a huge difference for fast pans. I think I’m going to go with the A7S III and just rent the A7 IV for occasional corporate shoots where I need the higher resolution.
