How to reduce stream delay for live Q&A sessions without breaking the bank?

Hey everyone! I've been live streaming on YouTube for about six months now, mostly doing Q&A sessions and occasional gaming streams. My current setup is a single PC with OBS Studio, a Logitech C920 webcam, and a Blue Yeti mic. The problem is that my viewers are experiencing around 20-30 seconds of delay between when I say something and when they see it. This makes real-time interaction really awkward – I'll ask a question, and the chat answers way after I've moved on.

I know some delay is normal, but 20-30 seconds feels excessive. I've already tried switching from the default YouTube ingest to the 'ultra low latency' option in OBS (which I think is actually the 'Low latency' setting now? I'm confused about the naming). It helped a bit but not enough. I'm not using any external encoders or hardware – just x264 on 'faster' preset. My upload speed is around 10 Mbps, and I stream at 1080p60. Any advice on how to minimize delay without buying expensive gear? I'm open to tweaking settings or even changing my streaming platform if that's the issue.

You're right, OBS renamed the settings. It's now under 'Output' -> 'Streaming' -> 'Streaming Settings' -> 'Latency Mode'. You have 'Normal', 'Low Latency', and 'Ultra Low Latency'. But here's the thing: the latency mode in OBS only affects how OBS sends data to the ingest server. The bigger culprit is YouTube's own buffering. Even with Ultra Low Latency, you'll still see 10-15 seconds of delay because YouTube adds its own buffer for stability.

One trick that works well: use a custom RTMP ingest with a lower 'stream key' buffer. But the real game-changer is to use a service like Restream or just switch to Twitch. Twitch's normal latency is around 5-10 seconds, and with 'Low Latency Mode' enabled in your Twitch settings (which is now the default), it can get down to 2-3 seconds. I know you might not want to switch, but if Q&A is your priority, Twitch is way better. Also, make sure you're using a wired ethernet connection – Wi-Fi can add jitter and force YouTube to buffer more.

I've been streaming on YouTube for years and I feel your pain. The delay is mostly on YouTube's end, but you can optimize your OBS settings to reduce it. First, in OBS, go to Settings -> Advanced -> Network and set 'Dyn Bitrate' ON. This helps stabilize your connection. Second, in the Output section, change your Rate Control to 'CBR' and set a Keyframe Interval of 1 second. That forces OBS to send keyframes every second, which helps the player start faster and reduces buffering.

Also, check your resolution and frame rate. 1080p60 requires more bandwidth and processing, which can add latency. If you're doing a Q&A, you don't need 60fps – switch to 1080p30 or even 720p30. That will reduce the encoding load and lower the delay by a few seconds. I know it's not a huge difference, but every second counts in live conversations.

Another tip: use the 'Render Delay' feature? No, that's for adding delay, not removing it. Ignore that. But make sure your x264 preset is 'ultrafast' or 'superfast' – it'll use more CPU but reduce encoding time. Your CPU should handle it if you're not gaming. Try that and see if it helps.

If you're serious about minimizing delay for interactive sessions, consider using a third-party service like Owncast or even a simple RTMP server on a VPS. But that's overkill for most. The simplest solution is to use YouTube's 'Ultra Low Latency' mode (which you already did) AND also enable 'Low Latency' in your YouTube live stream settings on the dashboard. In YouTube Studio, go to your live stream's 'Edit' page, scroll to 'Latency' and select 'Low latency'. That changes the player buffer on YouTube's side. It's a hidden gem that many people miss.

Also, I noticed you're using x264. If you have an NVIDIA GPU, you could switch to NVENC encoder. It's faster and doesn't add encoding delay. In OBS, set Encoder to 'NVIDIA NVENC H.264' and keep the preset to 'Quality' or 'Performance'. This will reduce the encoding time significantly. I've seen delays drop from 20 seconds to 10 seconds with just that change.

One more thing: make sure your upload speed is stable. 10 Mbps is fine for 1080p60, but if you're on a shared connection, it might fluctuate. Use a speed test and check if your upload is consistent. If you have packet loss, that forces YouTube to buffer more. You can enable 'Stats' in OBS to monitor dropped frames and network health.
