YouTube Studio Analytics Showing Lower CTR After Thumbnail Change – What Am I Missing?
Hey everyone, I’ve been running a gaming commentary channel for about 8 months now, and I’ve recently started focusing more on thumbnail optimization. Last week, I changed the thumbnail for one of my best-performing videos (a 15-minute Elden Ring boss guide) from a text-heavy design to a cleaner, high-contrast face close-up with an arrow pointing at the boss. The video had a steady 8.2% CTR before the change, and now it’s dropped to 5.1% over the past 7 days. I’m using YouTube Studio’s ‘Thumbnail Test’ feature for A/B testing, and the new thumbnail is losing in impressions and CTR by a significant margin. I kept the title and description identical, so the only variable is the thumbnail. I’m trying to understand if this is a statistical anomaly due to YouTube’s algorithm re-evaluating the video in the browse features, or if my new design actually underperforms. Has anyone else experienced a CTR drop after a thumbnail swap, and how long did it take for the analytics to stabilize? Should I revert to the old thumbnail or wait for more data?
