Best OBS Settings for 1080p60 Live Streaming on a Mid-Range PC (NVIDIA Encoder)

Hey everyone! I'm a small YouTube creator (about 2K subs) and I've been doing live streams every Sunday for the past few months. I mainly stream gameplay (Fortnite, Valorant, and some indie games) and occasionally do a 'talking head' stream where I just chat with viewers. My rig: Ryzen 5 5600X, RTX 3060 Ti, 16GB RAM, and a 144Hz monitor. I'm using OBS Studio 30.2 and I want to push 1080p60 without dropping frames or looking like a pixelated mess.

Right now I'm using the x264 encoder at 'faster' preset, but my CPU usage spikes to 80-90% during intense scenes, and I get encoder overload warnings. I know I should probably switch to NVENC (the new one), but I'm confused about the right bitrate, keyframe interval, and whether to use CBR or VBR. Also, I see people talking about 'lookahead' and 'psycho visual tuning' – are those worth enabling? Any help would be awesome!

Hey! I've been streaming for 3 years with a similar build (Ryzen 7 2700X, RTX 2060) and I made the switch to NVENC a while ago. Trust me, you won't look back. For 1080p60, use the NVENC H.264 encoder (the new one, not the old NVENC). Set the rate control to CBR, bitrate to 6000 Kbps (if your upload allows), and keyframe interval to 2 seconds (or 1, but 2 is standard). Enable 'Lookahead' (set to 20 frames) and 'Psycho Visual Tuning' – they do improve quality at the same bitrate, but they add a tiny bit of latency. Since you're not doing competitive streaming with low latency, it's fine.

Also, make sure your OBS is running as administrator and you have Game Mode off in Windows (it can cause stutter). I also set my encoder preset to 'Quality' (not 'Performance') – the new NVENC is so efficient that you'll have plenty of headroom. Your 3060 Ti will handle it easily.

I agree with most of that, but I'd actually recommend a lower bitrate for 1080p60 if you're not a partner yet. YouTube doesn't give everyone the same transcoding options, and if you're not getting quality options, viewers on mobile might buffer. I use 4500 Kbps and it still looks decent for fast-paced games. Also, if you have a 144Hz monitor, make sure your OBS canvas is 1080p and your output is 1080p – don't upscale. And set your FPS to 60 (not 59.94) unless you're streaming to Twitch – YouTube is fine with 60.

Another tip: in the 'Output' tab, set your 'Process Priority' to 'Above Normal' in Advanced settings – that helps avoid dropped frames when other background apps are running.

You guys are spot on. I just want to add that you should also check your upload speed. For 6000 Kbps, you need at least 7-8 Mbps stable. You can test with speedtest.net. Also, if you're streaming to YouTube, you can enable 'Low Latency' mode in OBS if you want real-time interaction, but it's not necessary.

One thing I learned the hard way: use a separate audio track for your mic and desktop audio. That way you can edit the VOD later without losing quality. In OBS, go to Settings > Output > Recording, and set audio tracks to 1 and 2. Then in Advanced, assign your mic to track 1 and desktop to track 2. This is a lifesaver for post-stream highlights.

Also, for your 'talking head' streams, you might want to lower your bitrate to 4500 Kbps because there's less motion, and it saves bandwidth for viewers.

I've been streaming on a laptop with a GTX 1650, so I know the struggle. For your setup, definitely use NVENC. But also consider using the 'Max Quality' preset if you have the GPU headroom. I've tested it and it looks noticeably better at 6000 Kbps. Another thing: enable 'B-frames' to 2 – it helps with compression efficiency. And set your 'Rate Control' to 'CBR' – VBR can cause bitrate spikes that might hurt your stream stability.

One more thing: if you're using a webcam, make sure you're not using a USB 2.0 port – that can cause bandwidth issues. Use a USB 3.0 port and set the webcam to 720p30 if possible, because 1080p60 webcams eat up GPU resources. I use a Logitech C920 and I cap it at 720p for streaming – it looks fine.

Also, don't forget to update your GPU drivers – Nvidia's latest ones have improved NVENC performance for OBS.
