Matching lavalier and shotgun audio for interviews: EQ and phase tips?

I've been shooting interviews for a local YouTube channel, and I'm running into a common but frustrating issue: when I use both a lavalier mic (Rode SmartLav+) and a shotgun mic (Rode VideoMic NTG) on a boom, the combined audio sounds muddy and sometimes a bit hollow, especially when I edit them together in Premiere Pro.
