Hey everyone! New creator here – looking to grow my channel and improve my editing workflow
Hi everyone! I'm @mediawizard77, a long-time video enthusiast who finally decided to take the plunge and start my own YouTube channel. I've been editing as a hobby for a few years (mostly in Premiere Pro), but I'm new to the creator community and want to learn from all of you. My channel will focus on tech reviews and tutorials, and I've already uploaded my first few videos, but I'm struggling with getting views and making my content stand out. I'm particularly interested in improving my editing workflow – I currently spend way too much time on color grading and audio cleanup. Also, I'm wondering if my current setup (a Sony A6400 with a 35mm prime, and a Rode VideoMic NTG) is good enough for YouTube, or if I should invest in something better. Any advice on how to grow from zero subscribers would be hugely appreciated! Looking forward to connecting with all of you and sharing tips and tricks. Thanks for having me!
Best OBS settings for streaming 1080p60 on a mid-range PC without dropping frames?
Hey everyone! I've been streaming for a few months now, mostly indie games and some lighter AAA titles, but I keep running into dropped frames and stuttering, especially when I'm playing something more demanding. My setup is a Ryzen 5 5600X, RTX 3060 Ti, 16GB RAM, and I'm using OBS Studio with the x264 encoder because I thought that would give better quality. I'm trying to stream at 1080p60 with a 6000 kbps bitrate, but my CPU usage spikes and I get encoding lag. What are the best OBS settings for a mid-range PC like mine? Should I switch to NVENC? I'm also curious about what bitrate and preset people recommend for Twitch specifically, since I know they have their own bitrate limits. Any help would be awesome!
Best OBS settings for 1080p60 live streaming on a mid-range PC?
Hey everyone! I've been creating ShortVi content for a while, but I'm finally diving into live streaming on YouTube. I have a decent mid-range PC (Ryzen 5 5600X, RTX 3060 Ti, 16GB RAM) and I want to stream at 1080p60 with a clean look. However, I'm getting frame drops and my stream looks a bit soft. I've watched a few tutorials but they all suggest different settings. Can anyone recommend the best OBS settings for my setup, especially the encoder, bitrate, and keyframe interval? Also, should I use the NVENC encoder or x264? I'm on a 10 Mbps upload speed. Thanks in advance!
How to Build a Video Editing Portfolio That Actually Gets You Clients?
Hey everyone! I've been editing videos for about two years now, mostly for friends and small social media gigs, but I'm ready to take it seriously and start attracting real clients. The problem is, I have no idea how to structure a portfolio that stands out. I have a bunch of random edits – some music videos, a few vlogs, and some corporate talking-head stuff – but they're all over the place. Should I focus on one niche or show versatility? Also, what's the best platform to host it on: a personal website, Vimeo, or maybe a YouTube showcase? I'd love to hear how you all landed your first clients and what your portfolio looked like at that stage. I've also read that case studies are important, but I'm not sure how to present them without giving away too much of my process. Any advice on how to write a compelling case study that highlights my editing skills while still being concise? And what about the 'before and after' clips – do clients actually care about those, or is it just a nice-to-have? Thanks in advance for any tips!
Best Way to Integrate Affiliate Links in YouTube Descriptions Without Hurting CTR?
Hey everyone! I've been running a tech review channel for about a year now, and I'm finally starting to see some steady growth. I've applied to a few affiliate programs (Amazon Associates, and a couple of direct ones like for camera gear), and I want to start integrating those links into my video descriptions. But I'm worried about it hurting my click-through rate (CTR) on the video itself. I've heard that having too many links or making the description look spammy can turn off viewers and even affect how YouTube's algorithm ranks the video. I've seen big creators do it seamlessly, but when I try to add links, it feels cluttered. I'm also not sure about the best place to put them - should it be at the very top of the description, or further down after the 'about' section? Also, I've heard about using link shorteners or affiliate disclosure - I want to stay compliant with FTC rules. Any advice on how to structure the description to keep it clean, effective, and not hurt my CTR? Thanks in advance!
Hello from a long-time lurker: Finally introducing myself and my gear journey
Hey everyone! I've been a silent member of this forum for over a year now, soaking up all the amazing advice and tutorials. I finally decided to create an account and say hello. I'm a hobbyist filmmaker from the Netherlands, and I've been making short travel and lifestyle videos for my personal YouTube channel for about three years. I've learned so much from this community, so I wanted to introduce myself properly. My current setup is a Sony A7 IV with a 24-105mm f/4 lens, and I use a DJI RS 3 gimbal for most of my run-and-gun shooting. For audio, I rely on a Rode VideoMic NTG, but I've been thinking about upgrading to a wireless lav system like the DJI Mic 2 for better on-camera interviews. I edit in DaVinci Resolve (free version) on a MacBook Pro M1 Pro, and I've been slowly learning color grading. I'm particularly interested in improving my storytelling and pacing in edits, as well as understanding YouTube's algorithm better for my niche. I'm excited to finally participate in discussions and share what I've learned. If anyone has tips on transitioning from a single-person setup to a two-person team, I'd love to hear your experiences. Thanks for having me!
Best way to reduce stream delay for live chat interaction?
Hey everyone! I've been live streaming my video editing sessions on YouTube for a few months now, and I'm really enjoying it. However, I've noticed a significant delay between when I speak and when my viewers see it in chat. It's usually around 20-30 seconds, which makes real-time interaction with my chat feel clunky. I've tried lowering my bitrate and using a wired connection, but the delay persists. I'm using OBS Studio with a capture card for my camera, streaming at 1080p60. My internet upload speed is 50 Mbps, and I'm located in Europe while most of my viewers are in the US. I know some of the delay is inherent to the platform, but I've seen other creators have almost instant chat responses. Is there a way to reduce this latency further? Should I switch to a different streaming protocol or adjust my encoder settings? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Hello from a long-time lurker: finally ready to share my journey from hobbyist to serious creator!
Hey everyone! I've been a silent member of ShortVi for about two years now, soaking up all the amazing advice and tutorials. I finally decided to introduce myself because I'm at a turning point in my content creation journey. I started making videos about 5 years ago as a hobby, mostly travel vlogs and random tech reviews, but I've recently decided to take it seriously with the goal of making it my full-time job by the end of 2026. I currently run a YouTube channel (about 45k subs) and a TikTok (about 120k followers) where I post weekly content. I'm a bit stuck on how to grow further, especially with the algorithm changes and the rise of AI tools. I'd love to hear from others who have successfully transitioned to full-time, and any advice on workflow, monetization, or audience retention. I'm also open to collabs and making new friends in the community!
Dialogue audio too quiet and muddy in interviews – what's the best mic setup for under $500?
Hey everyone, I've been doing talking-head interviews for my YouTube channel for about a year now, and I'm constantly fighting with audio. My current setup is a single Rode VideoMic Pro mounted on my camera (Sony A7 III), placed about 3 feet away from the subject. The problem is that the audio always comes out quiet and muddy, especially when the subject moves or turns their head. I end up boosting gain in post, which brings up room tone and makes it worse. I've tried using the built-in high-pass filter on the mic, but it still sounds boxy and lacks clarity. I'm looking to upgrade my audio gear with a budget of around $500. I want something that's reliable, easy to set up for solo shoots, and gives me that clean, broadcast-quality sound. I've been eyeing the Rode Wireless GO II or a shotgun mic like the Sennheiser MKE 600, but I'm not sure which is better for indoor interviews. Should I go wireless lav, or stick with a boom/shotgun approach? Also, do I need a dedicated audio recorder like a Zoom H5, or can I record straight into the camera? I'd love to hear what's working for other creators in this space.
Best budget-friendly lighting setup for faceless YouTube videos?
Hey everyone! I'm starting a faceless YouTube channel (tech reviews and tutorials) and I'm on a tight budget. I know lighting is crucial for product shots and B-roll, but I'm overwhelmed by all the options. I have a basic two-point setup with cheap softboxes, but the colors look dull and there's a lot of shadows. I'm shooting with a Sony ZV-E10 and a 30mm lens. What's the best budget-friendly lighting setup (under $150) that will give me a crisp, professional look for tabletop shots? I've heard about LED panels vs. ring lights, and color temperature matters. Any specific gear recommendations or placement tips would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!
Showcasing a Short Documentary: Feedback on Pacing and Sound Mix?
Hey everyone! I've been working on a short documentary about a local blacksmith for the past few months, and I finally have a rough cut that I'm pretty proud of. It's about 8 minutes long, and I'm aiming for a cinematic, intimate feel. The story follows his daily process and the history of the trade, with a focus on the rhythmic sounds of the forge. I'd love to get some feedback from this community, especially on two things: pacing and sound mix. I feel like the middle section drags a bit, and I'm not sure if my ambient audio levels are competing with the voiceover. I'm editing in DaVinci Resolve, and I've used a Rode NTG3 on a boom for interviews and a Zoom H6 for ambience. Any thoughts on how to tighten the narrative or improve the audio balance would be massively appreciated. I've attached a private link to the cut if anyone has time to check it out!
Using copyrighted music in YouTube videos – what's the actual risk in 2026?
Hey everyone, I've been making tech review videos for about a year now, and I keep running into the same dilemma: adding popular music tracks to my videos makes them way more engaging, but I'm terrified of getting a copyright strike or having my channel demonetized. I know the basics – don't use copyrighted music without permission – but I see big creators doing it all the time and getting away with it. Are they just lucky, or is there a legal loophole I'm missing? Specifically, I'm wondering about the difference between using a few seconds of a song as a 'transition' vs. having it play in the background for a minute. Does length matter? Also, what about using music from platforms like Epidemic Sound or Artlist – is that actually safe, or can the rights still be revoked? I'd love to hear from anyone who's dealt with Content ID claims or even a real lawsuit. What's the worst that can actually happen to a small channel like mine?
TikTok Re-uploading Old Videos: Shadowban or Algorithm Reset?
Hey everyone, I've been running a faceless history channel on TikTok for about 4 months now, posting daily. I hit 50k followers last week with decent views (100-500k per video). But I'm running out of fresh content ideas, so I started re-uploading my top-performing videos from 2 months ago with slightly different captions and hashtags. The results have been brutal: the re-uploads are stuck at 200-300 views, while my new original videos still get normal reach. Is TikTok shadowbanning recycled content? Or is the algorithm treating them as 'low-quality' duplicates? I've checked for community guideline strikes—nothing. I also tried deleting the old videos before re-uploading, but same result. Any advice on how to safely repurpose old content without killing my reach?
Best AI tools for automated video captioning and translation in 2026?
Hey everyone, I'm a solo creator producing weekly tech tutorials in English, but I want to expand to Spanish and Portuguese audiences. I've been manually adding captions and translating scripts, which takes hours per video. I've tried a few AI subtitle generators but they often miss technical jargon or mess up timing. What are the best AI tools or workflows for automated captioning and translation that actually work well with technical content? I'm using Premiere Pro 2025 and have a decent GPU (RTX 4070). Budget is flexible, but I'd prefer something that integrates directly into Premiere or runs locally for faster processing. Also, any tips for ensuring accuracy with terms like 'bandwidth' or 'API endpoint'? Thanks!
How to effectively showcase before/after color grading in a portfolio?
Hey everyone! I've been building my color grading portfolio and I'm struggling with how to present before/after comparisons in a way that's both visually striking and technically informative. I've seen some creators use split-screen comparisons, but I feel like that can be distracting. I'm also considering using a slider overlay (like the ones you see on photography sites) but I'm not sure if that's standard for video portfolios. I primarily work in DaVinci Resolve and export in 4K ProRes 422 HQ for my reel. My niche is cinematic commercial work (beauty products, lifestyle). I want potential clients to immediately see the impact of my grade without having to play a full video. Any thoughts on the best layout, resolution, or even platform (Vimeo vs. personal website) for this?
First client video: how to price a 3-minute corporate profile with drone footage?
Hey everyone! I finally landed my first real client gig – a 3-minute corporate profile for a local logistics company. They want a mix of talking head interviews (CEO, operations manager), b-roll of their warehouse and fleet, and drone footage of their distribution center. I've got a Sony A7IV, a DJI Mini 3 Pro, and I edit in DaVinci Resolve. I'm shooting everything in S-Log3, and I'll grade it to match their brand colors (dark blue and orange). I've never charged for a project like this before. I've done freebies for friends, but this is a legit business. The client asked for a quote, and I'm completely lost. I'm thinking of charging by the project rather than hourly, but I don't want to undersell myself or scare them away. What's a fair price for a 3-min corporate spot with drone, color grading, and one revision round? Also, should I include a usage license fee or just a flat production fee? Any advice on negotiating with a first-time client would be amazing. Thanks!
Fair Use or Copyright Infringement? My Reaction Channel Got a Strike for Using 10 Seconds of a Movie Scene
Hey everyone, I’ve been running a reaction and commentary channel for about two years now, and I just received my first copyright strike. The video in question was a reaction to a popular sci-fi movie. I used a 10-second clip from the film to illustrate a point about visual storytelling, and I added my own voiceover and text overlays. I thought this clearly fell under fair use for commentary and criticism, but the copyright holder (a major studio) issued a takedown. I’ve filed a counter-notification, but I’m nervous because I’ve heard horror stories about accounts being terminated. I’m trying to understand where the line is drawn. I see huge reaction channels using similar clips all the time without issues. Is it just a matter of size? Or are there specific steps I should take to transform the content more? I’ve read YouTube’s fair use guidelines but they feel vague. Also, does the length of the clip matter? I’ve heard a ‘rule of thumb’ like 10 seconds or less is safe, but obviously that didn’t work for me. Any advice on how to proceed and how to avoid this in the future would be greatly appreciated.
How do you push through the creative slump without sacrificing quality?
I've been grinding hard on my channel for the past two years, and lately I feel like I'm hitting a wall. My last few videos have lower engagement, and I'm struggling to come up with fresh ideas that excite me. I know burnout is common, but I don't want to just pump out low-effort content to keep the algorithm happy. How do you all maintain your creative spark and video quality when you're feeling drained? Any tips on structuring breaks or changing up workflows would be gold.
