Shorts views stuck at 500? Need help with YouTube Shorts algorithm in 2026

Hey everyone! I've been posting YouTube Shorts for about 3 months now, and my views are consistently stuck around 500-600 per video. I know the algorithm changed last year with the new 'Shorts Discovery' update, but I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong. I've tried different lengths (15s, 30s, 45s), different hooks, and even posting times, but nothing seems to break through. My retention is around 80-85% for most shorts, and I use trending audio. What am I missing?

I've read that the algorithm now prioritizes 'watch history' and 'session time' over pure retention, but I can't seem to get any of my videos to appear in the 'swipe feed' for new viewers. My channel is a cooking channel, and I've been posting 1-2 shorts daily. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I feel your pain! I had the same issue with my tech review shorts. What worked for me was focusing on the first 1-2 seconds way more aggressively. Instead of a cold intro like 'Hey guys', I started using a visual hook + text overlay that instantly shows the outcome. Also, check your 'Audience retention' graph in YouTube Studio – if there's a dip in the first 3 seconds, the algorithm won't push it. Another thing: I stopped using trending audio and started using original sounds. Since the 2025 update, the algorithm seems to favor original audio for discovery because it boosts 'session time' when people watch multiple videos from the same creator. Try that for a week and see if it helps.
Keep rendering, keep uploading.

That's interesting, but I'd add that you also need to check your 'Shorts feed' CTR (click-through rate) in the new 'Discovery' tab in YouTube Studio. If your thumbnail (the frame at the start) isn't compelling, you won't get swipes. For cooking, a high-quality close-up of the final dish with a bold text like '5-Minute Meal' works well. Also, make sure you're not posting more than once a day – I've seen channels get throttled for spammy uploads. The algorithm wants to see consistent, quality content, not a firehose. Also, have you tried using the 'Shorts remix' feature on your own videos to create a series? That helped me build a loop.

Thanks for the tips, everyone! I checked my retention graph and you were right – there was a dip at 2 seconds. I also switched to original audio and I'm already seeing a difference – my last short got 1.2k views in the first hour, which is a huge jump from before. I also started using a text overlay in the first frame and it seems to help. I'll keep testing and update you all in a week. Appreciate the help!
