How do you handle brand deal exclusivity clauses when you have multiple sponsors?

Brand Deals & Sponsorships Created: 03.08.2026 03:54 2 Views
Hey everyone! I'm a small creator (about 50K subs) and I've been lucky enough to land a few brand deals this year. But I just received a contract from a tech sponsor that includes an exclusivity clause saying I can't promote any competing brands for 30 days before and after the campaign. I also have a standing monthly deal with another tech brand that overlaps with that window. How do you all navigate these exclusivity clauses? Do you try to negotiate them out, or just work around them? I'm worried about losing the bigger sponsor if I push back too hard, but I also don't want to jeopardize my recurring income. Any advice would be super helpful!

Great question! Exclusivity clauses are super common, but they're almost always negotiable. The key is to communicate early and propose a solution that works for both sides. I've had success with narrowing the exclusivity window (e.g., from 30 days to 14 days) or limiting it to a specific product category (e.g., only 'wireless earbuds' instead of all electronics). Also, ask if they can exclude your existing long-term partner from the clause—many brands are willing to make exceptions if you explain the relationship. Just be professional and provide a clear reason. You might be surprised how flexible they can be when you approach it as a collaboration.

I totally get that fear, but remember: you have more leverage than you think. Brands need authentic creators, and if you're a good fit, they'll work with you. I once had a similar situation, and I simply asked the new sponsor if they could exclude my existing brand from the exclusivity. They said yes because they valued the long-term partnership. Also, consider the timing—can you adjust the campaign dates slightly? Sometimes a small shift in the schedule can solve the overlap. And if they refuse, you might have to weigh the short-term gain against the long-term loss. Don't undervalue your recurring revenue!
Creator burnout is real, take care guys.
One thing to watch out for: exclusivity clauses often have vague language like 'any competing product' which can be interpreted broadly. I always ask for a specific list of competitors or a definition of what counts as competing. That way, you know exactly what you can and can't promote. Also, consider the '30 days before and after'—that's actually a long time. Many brands will accept a shorter window if you argue that it's standard in the industry. I've seen 7 days before and after be the norm for some niches. So definitely push back on the duration. And if you have a good relationship with your existing sponsor, ask them if they can be flexible too—maybe they can shift their campaign a bit. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the advice! I took your suggestions and emailed the new sponsor asking for a narrower exclusivity window (14 days) and to exclude my existing tech partner. They agreed! I'm so relieved. I also asked for a clearer definition of 'competing products' and they sent over a specific list. It's amazing how negotiation works if you just ask.
